Seriously... whenever there's a light drizzle, my internet connection goes haywire. It's absolutely nuts.
So once again Marc Burckhardt didn't show up for class, but the funny foreign substitute was there again. He delivered the best lecture about becoming an artist that I've ever heard. As we were preparing to turn in our work, he passed by me and said that he saw a lot of potential in my illustrations. "Plenty of great stuff here," he said.
After class, I walked to the elevator with him just talking about art and the program. I said, "I'm sorry, I didn't get your name."
"Erick Nielsen," he said.
::blink blink::
The fucking chair of the department of fine arts.
I apologized for not recognizing him, but I'd never seen him before. He chuckled and said that nowadays he mostly just fills in when needed. We continued talking until we parted ways at the second floor.
So I'm a bit intimidated because the assignment due next week is a full color illustration of one of our sketches -- acrylic on illustration board. I haven't worked with paint in ages! And I've never been any good with it. I only hope I can get the same textures out of it as I can with charcoal.
.....
A friend of mine lost two of his best friends he's known for the past ten years. They died in a car wreck early Sunday morning in San Antonio. Both were honor students and friends since childhood.
God, they were so young ... only twenty. And well, it just sucks when young people die. I've told Bill that I'm here if he needs to talk, so I really hope he takes me up on it. This is some pretty heavy stuff and I can only imagine what it would be like losing two of my best friends.
