No shit, there I was... lying in bed with the most hideous cramps I've had since I was a teenager; I mean the kind that rival labor pains kind'a teenager; and I find myself needing to take a little Valerian root and some other herbal remedies to try and ease the tension. I lay in bed on a heating pad set to OMG can't this thing get any hotter?

In Unix & Linux, you just add the -p option ("padding"). It's used to help diagnose data dependent issues.
One very famous of these was the famous "ping of deathThere was also a fun exploit where you could put in the ping packet the escape code for the old Hayes modems and then anything after that would be read by the modem as commands to follow... thus something like "ATH" would tell the modem to hang up. You could do all sorts of nastier things, too, like changing the dialing preferences to use European tones ( ... )
