The woods around them were silent except for the sound of the two wolves breathing. Their howls of pleasure chased all but the bravest creatures far away and those precious few certainly weren't going to make their presence known for fear of ending up the way the deer had ( Read more... )

He slept deeply, soft snores coming from him. His dreams were filled with the images of a Pack of shades, and pups running everywhere. The images were disjointed, at times, and caused him to twitch and whimper in his sleep.

Her dreams were more pleasant, though no more concrete. She woke pressed hard against him with her head worked under his. The last thing she remembered was a version of a dream she had often. She ran with their pack, finally carefree and certain they would stay with her no matter what came next.

Her eyes fluttered open and she sighed softly. So beautiful.

Her voice touched his mind and he grunted softly. Aye, lass, ye are. He didn't open his eyes, but he did shift some to press against her.

She groaned loudly in his mind, loudly enough that it was as if she were right against his ear. Yer impossible, man, just impossible.

She slowly stretched her paws out ahead of her. I meant my dream, ye big bully.

And what 'bout ye dream, lass? He rolled onto his side and started scratching his belly with a back leg.

Was just about life. She stretched out fully, lifting her rump to get her front fully extended, then finally flattening out on her belly with her paws out ahead of her. With the pack, part of it, and happy. Felt good.

He rolled a little more, until he was half on his back with his feet in the air. Well, then, lass, we'll 'ave ta 'urry and get back.

She looked over at him, shaking her head slowly. The urge to jump him was suppressed by her deep desire to roll over herself. Town's that way. She flicked an ear toward it.

And there's a forest the other way. He shifted and hopped to his feet, giving a full body shake before trotting off away from town.

Her laughter easily reached his mind well before she shook herself off enough to get up and follow him. She took her time warming up a little before hustling to catch up to him. When she did, she bumped his shoulder with hers. Ye have a plan or just a feeling, love?

He bumped her back with a soft yip. Following me nose, lass. Ye should try it sometime.

He ran off ahead of her, flicking his tail against her face as he passed her. It was a dare, a challenge for her to keep up.

She yipped back at him. I follow yer nose all the time, man, what are ye on about?

She trotted behind him for a moment, then put on a burst of speed to catch up, taking an indirect route that sent her over fallen logs and through a patch of flowers. The running was for the pure joy of moving rather than really matching his speed.

He was so busy watching her run near him that he completely missed the hole he stepped in. It sent him tumbling head over tail into a pond. He came up a moment later and shook himself off before he started moving again.

She slowed only long enough to determine he was moving again, then she got back up to full speed. She cut across his path for no reason other than to have to jump a log on the other side of him.

'Tis a fine place.

Aye, except for that puddle. He slowed himself to a trot, then flopped down in the next clear spot to inspect his paw. Satisfied that he would survive, he rolled onto his back and started rubbing against the ground.

She circled around him, sniffing at trees and odd flashes of sunlight coming through the trees. Cruel puddle, splashing ye that way. Ye should give it a stern talking to.

She heard a mouse but didn't bother going after it, choosing to skirt just outside his reach instead.
