I went to my school's annual Journalism Forum today. It was quite interesting, there was a lot of talk on the New Media Renaissance, and what effect new online media is having on print and radio media. The ways in which civilian journalism is aided (and also hindered) by social networking sites like Twitter and blog services.
One of the speakers was fantastic, a journalist named Nina Funnell (look her up, she's awesome). She had some really different takes on online media and how currently there are newspapers attempting to collaborate with new forms of online news. She also had a lot of encouraging comments on online media and how the best thing to do if you're interested in journalism is to "get out there and WRITE things". We talked about online creative outlets and whether the new media values speed of information over how well it's put. It was awesome.
It also raised a lot of the good points to online publishing outlets like Live Journal and (although it wasn't specifically mentioned) fan works and fan fiction.
The other two speakers weren't as good, they both didn't seem to know where they stood on the issue. One of them spent her whole speech reiterating the "Internet is useful for journalist BUT YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL" point. The other started by telling us she "wasn't good with technology". Not the best way to start a speech on the uses of technology and social networking in journalism.
There were some really interesting stories about the role social networking's been playing in some of the recent disasters and uprisings- particularly the story of this guy (fuck names, I don't remember) who basically became the news source for most of the world on what was happening in Benghazi in April, through social networks. He actually got shot, but the network he'd set up continued.
All in all an interesting evening.
In other news I had the worst Latin assessment of my life today, discussed poking Jane Austen with a stick (which is something I'll write about later) and had a really great discussion with the student teacher in my drama class on whether the ending of the play Summer of the Seventeeth Doll was realistic or not.
You should all check out "The Doll". It's an Australian play, it's the third in a trilogy called The Doll Trilogy, and it is just amazing. I'm going to see it in April.
Anyway....
So, that's what you missed, on ME!
