e-mail; iikka04@gmail.com
or AIM: suomailla

IC;
nation: the Åland Islands

name: Malin Alexandra Petersson
nickname(s): none, but feel free to come up with one
age: 22
date of birth: 9th June, 1988
hometown: Mariehamn, Åland Islands
occupation: unemployed at the moment, as she has just returned to the US; has the education to work as a nurse
residence: uncertain (I'm in the process of making plans for this with some citizens of Liberty. :3 )
family: Malin's mother Charlotta Petersson (41) lives in Kristinestad in western Finland, having moved there when she and Malin's father Paul Petersson divorced in 2001. She's a sister of Svea Oxenstierna, which makes Berwald Oxenstierna Malin's cousin. Malin's father died in an accident on the Åland Islands in January 2010; Malin was heartbroken when she heard the news because she had always loved her father the most in her family. She travelled to Mariehamn and stayed there for a year, arranging everything so that she could return to the US for good.

first impression: Most people get a sudden urge to make a U-turn and walk away faster when they see Malin approaching them - it's not her intention, but she can't help that her neutral expression makes it seem like she's very, very annoyed and going to strangle the next person that talks to her, even though that's not the case at all. It's been said that she and her cousin Berwald are very similar in many ways...

TEN TRUE FACTS AND A SECRET

1. Malin's past is troubled. She has a tendency to blame her mother for all the problems she had as a teenager, but she is well aware that she doesn't have the right to put the blame on anyone else besides herself. Charlotta and Paul were young when Charlotta got pregnant on accident and gave birth to Malin; the marriage was rushed and lasted for 13 years before it fell apart. Because of the tense, argument-filled home, Malin grew up into a very attention-seeking child. When she reached puberty, all Hell broke loose - she would pick fights with her mother and teachers at all times, and when she was offered drugs, she happily gave in to the temptation. After a while, her parents finally caught on what was happening to their daughter and her downfall was stopped. When Charlotta moved to mainland Finland, Paul stayed behind with Malin because she couldn't stand her mother by then.

2. Malin is a friendly person, but very prejudiced towards certain type of people. She likes making new friends both face to face and on the Internet; humans fascinate her to no end. She even considered the profession of a psychologist once upon a time because she is rather fond of analyzing all her acquiantances. She is social to the point that she starts to feel lonely if she has to spend more than a day without actual human contact - and when she opens her mouth, she can talk for hours without end (this doesn't mean it's always something you want to hear, as Malin has a bad habit of gossiping). She's the one you'll be most likely to find in the centre of the room, socialising with as many friends as possible.

3. However, as stated above, she is prejudiced - especially towards all the Finnish-speaking Finns. She hasn't had many nice experiences with them. Most of her Finnish classmates, when she was studying to become a nurse, teased her because of her weird-sounding Finnish and came up with annoying nicknames. She's also irritated about the slow removal of the Swedish language in Finland. Every time she comes across a Finn, her immediate reaction is loathing, even though she feels a bang of guilt for it. It would take a lot to change her view on this, as she is too proud to admit that she might be wrong.

4. Malin cherishes her origins. She prefers talking in Swedish instead of English whenever it's possible and, as a rule, refuses to speak Finnish in any situation, even though she can. That is more because she's afraid of being teased about her accent, however. She clings onto her traditions desperately and always has someone to send her things that you can buy on the Åland Islands but not in the US. She never considered herself a Finn, but calls herself an Ålander instead. Despite her love for her homeplace, she has decided that she will only return there for vacations because she feels she needs to be close to her only family left: her cousin Berwald.

5. Doesn't she have a mother, too? Yes, but Malin prefers not to think about her. They separated on bad terms and have not made a peace after that. If possible, the sudden death of Malin's father made the things all the worse. When he died, Malin quit her job and took the next flight to the Åland Islands, where she organized the funeral and tried to cope with the pain of losing her father all by herself. Charlotta did send her condolences, but didn't show up for the funeral. Malin was deeply offended by this and vowed not to speak to her mother again. This helped her to make the decision to sell her father's house, gather all her things and move to the US for good.

6. Having grown up near the nature, Malin has developed a great love for everything that has anything to do with it. She isn't a city-person at all. Malin is very fond of all animals and supports animal rights, although she's not as passionate about it as many others. She has taken part in many protests against bad treatment of animals and frequently carries different petitions with her, asking her friends and acquiantances to sign them. Malin doesn't watch the TV much, but she likes the documentaries about strange creatures of the world; she's amazed at the wealth that the Earth carries and dislikes people who don't care about the state of the nature.

7. In addition to her nature-friendliness, she likes to take care of herself, too; she has exercised regularly since she started her studies and is planning to do so until she's too old to move. She likes running the most, but she also goes to the gym and has fallen hard for Zumba, which she picked up after her father's death to distract herself from the pain. She used to play football when she was younger and was quite good at it, but hasn't practiced in years. She thinks of exercise as a way to keep herself fit but also to ease stress; whenever she feels irritated or stressed, she goes out for a long run or starts cleaning furiously.

8. Sometimes exercising isn't enough to make her irritation fade. Malin, when angered, can be as cunning and sly as a fox; she will make the person she dislikes suffer. She doesn't take criticism well - blows to her self-esteem remind her of her teenager days and irritate her instantly. However, she rarely gets sad about any kind of insults (she has figured that it doesn't help anything) and usually just bites back more sharply. She enjoys watching others wriggle and stutter in her presence and feels little guilt for it; after all, she doesn't let it get too far and stops when she feels that she's got the revenge she's entitled to. Malin never means to cause severe harm to anyone, no matter what it might seem like at times.

9. In her free-time, Malin enjoys those romance novels that are often called trash. It's a guilty pleasure of hers; despite various relationships with both men and women that have ended in disasters and proved that love is not always enough, she still wants to believe in true love that saves everyone. Malin is quick to fall in love and when that happens, she spends her days dreaming of fairytale-like endings. She is also quick to ruin her relationships because everything needs to be done in her way and little things out of order start annoying her very fast.

10. Despite all her requirements for her partners, she is a loyal friend. Malin can keep secrets and promises, if she has said so - it actually really hurts her feelings if someone is doubtful of her, because she expects the same trust and loyalty in return. She tries her best to be honest with those she considers her true friends, and she would never leave them in trouble. She lives by the rule that whatever is done to her friends is done to her, too; Malin would defend her friends to the end if need was.

secret: Malin tries her best to pretend that her past problems with drugs don't exist. And, even if she could admit to having been an addict if she trusted the person enough, she would never, ever tell anyone that she's still not clear. There is currently one person in the whole world who knows her secret (as of New Year's Eve 2010) and she wants to keep it that way. She is very ashamed of herself for this.

writing sample:

Malin was on her knees on the cold floor, surrounded by cardboard boxes of different size and colour. The dim light in the room came from the snowflake-framed window - it was barely fifteen minutes past three in the afternoon and the sun was setting, leaving the sky a very fascinating shade of purple. The shadow of Malin's slim figure was growing taller on the wall. She had been going through her father's belongings for a few hours now, occasionally pausing to remember her childhood days when she saw familiar items before letting go of the memory and drying her teary eyes. She had put a few objects aside, meaning to take them with her when she would leave to the United States.

Her father hadn't owned many things; there were a few trophies which he had won with his football team, Father's Day cards made by Malin when she was a child, several packages of mint candies that he had despised but had always been given by his aunt (Malin guessed that he had been too soft-hearted to throw them away), and a few books. Malin couldn't help but smile when she read the titles, “Lasse Virén and the secrets of long-distance running” and “Teemu”. Her father had been sports-crazed like all the others in the neighbourhood.

It felt difficult, to think that she would be leaving this house in someone else's hands in a few weeks and never returning. She let out a shaky breath. She loved the house dearly; all of its quirks were familiar to her. She wondered how long it would take the new residents to learn that the third step on the stairs to the basement creaked horribly, that the bathroom door didn't always lock and that certain corners in the house were ice-cold in the winter. It wouldn't be her worry soon anymore.

Malin sighed and got up. Her shoulders were a bit tense because she had spent too much time in one and same position, so she rolled them and decided to go out for a walk. The crispy winter weather would clear her thoughts.

I'm sorry if this is a bit rusty, I haven't written anything in a year. OTL
I tried to make the application a tad different from the previous one, but it was difficult, seeing as the character is the same. I didn't want to change her too much.
