Caroline moved stealthily to the side of his bed and gave his side a shove, wanting some space to crawl in with him. "I can't sleep," she mumbled, missing the comfort of his arms around her after a long, hard evening.

It really wasn't and after spending the evening feeling like some sort of intruder, or at least a voyeur, Jake didn't mind the company. He still grunted as Caroline poked him, though, that much was mandatory.

"Really? I thought you were sleepwalking," he murmured as he rolled onto his side so she could climb in.

She curled up against his side and made a face at him in the dark. "You could at least fake happy to see me."

"Why should I have to fake when I am?" he asked, his arm sliding around her as he shifted back on top of her.

"I don't know, maybe because you're still mad at me?" Caroline asked, not sure how he was after what she'd tried to do earlier in the evening.

That felt ages ago and his anger had been muted by everything else that had come in between. He wondered if he still should be. "You didn't do it."

"I still could," she pointed out. "Not that I'm planning on it. Still, it's so strange to have my mom asking me questions about dying."

"But it's good, right?" he checked, deciding to ignore her remark. "It's better than keeping this all a secret?"

"I don't know," she sighed, burying her face against his neck for the moment. "At least then I could still pretend to be semi-normal."

"We're not, though," he wrapped his arms around her more tightly, making a face as he remembered Liz' accusation. "I think we're better off being ourselves."

"I guess," she allowed, happy to have him hugging her, like that would improve how she was feeling about everything. "You know, she thinks she can help keep us safe. Like, stop anyone from trying to shoot you or stake me. It's kind of cute."

"She's your mom," he fitted his chin on top of her head as he held on to her. "Of course she wants to keep you safe. It's what parents do.'"

She wasn't so sure that was all there was to it. "At least now I won't have to worry so much about keeping up appearances, right?" Caroline checked. "No hiding my blood bags or pretending I can't open jars of pickles."

"It will better," Jake agreed quietly, rubbing his hand across her back. "I know it's all weird now, but it's going to make everything easier in the long run."

"If you're wrong, I get to blame you for it, yeah?" she checked, tilting her head up to kiss his neck.

"No," he sighed at the feel of her lips against his skin. "I'm not going to be wrong."
