I care surprisingly little about water mains

I've been fighting a long war this week with my left shift key. When I'm bored with homework, I tend to pop out the keys that have the most hair and dust under them and clean them up (maybe you do the same; I don't know if you do the same), and somehow the one shift key refuses to stay in and function like a normal key.

This is especially annoying when we compare the amount of time I've spent fiddling with the key is significantly less than the amount of time I've spent writing, reading The Name of the Rose (which isn't the dullest read I've ever voluntarily undertaken, but is no Terry Pratchett or whatever else you've got either; I've heard many good things, and expect it to pick up once I'm done), and quite possibly exercising.

On the other hand, I've been speeding through Kingdom Hearts, which is most enjoyable. I was probably supposed to finish Baldur's Gate first, you say? That is true. I'm working on it.

On the other hand, I have had a reasonably productive day today: I got my hours for my first week at work (first day is Saturday), made a list of things I need to do, and got my car looked at; there's a shaking when it accelerates at highway speeds. It doesn't mean that the front of the car is going to fall off, though. Yay!

I also voted on the North Stonington town budget, at the kind of town meeting that takes place in the elementary school gym/cafeteria.

I think, once I have a more fixed abode, I'm going to pay more attention to municipal elections. There's actually a certain amount of drama which could be an interesting narrative backdrop, either for a romantic-comedy or possibly a story where a bunch of terrorists take over a town council meeting in a Snow-Crash type setting where there are no governments past the municipal setting. Just a plot bunny to keep bouncing around. Plus, it's really one of those things that reinforces one of my favorite philosophies. No one is actually stupid; everyone is in truth very smart, but just within a certain number of spheres.

We won, by the way. The budget had massive cuts to the Department of Education, but they could have been worse. I'm sure I'd have made more sense of it if I had been to the other meetings, and had I actually paid property taxes. I voted yes mainly because my mother, who has been following,

I'm watching a taped copy of the 24 Season Finale. I consciously know that there are a bunch of shows I ought to be watching instead, but that's an issue for next season. Next fall, I will watch Lost (I'm torrenting Season Two) and the new Aaron Sorkin, and that will be better, but for now, it's good TV, and that's really all that matters.

Speaking of TV: rewatching Season One of Arrested Development is something I've done more last and this week than fiddling with my shift key. I have few regrets on this score

I also watched Munich. I'm... ambivalent. It never really gelled. Which may be the point: it's not an Action Movie, any more than Saving Private Ryan is an action movie. I think I'll need to see it again to figure it out, and firm up my opinion. I also need to see Good Night, and Good Luck. which I gave my mom for Mother's Day, but we never got around to watching it.

For whatever reason, I've never felt any major desire to watch Capote and Brokeback Mountain, even though I know I'd probably enjoy both of them. You know, that thing. It's the same reason I'll probably never read Proust or Joyce: an illogical, reasonless disinterest. There really ought to be a word for that, but I can't find a fitting Portmanteau for it right now.

The commercial break disguises how little time President Logan and the First Lady took having sex.
