There was something in the air that night. Something stirring just on the outskirts of Sehun’s campsite. He was on high alert but he didn’t even know why.
His fire was roaring but he still added more wood. If there was something lurking just beyond the small lighted area he was sitting in then the fire may help keep him safe. He added three more logs and then sat back down on a log he had pulled from the forest earlier.
Sehun opened his backpack, which was sitting on the ground by his feet, and pulled out an apple. He took small bites and listened to the woods surrounding him. He couldn’t hear anything but his fire crackling. There was no wind, no insects, nothing. Besides the sounds Sehun was making it was dead silent.
Sehun finished eating his apple and threw the core into the fire before him. He stared at the flames and felt the heat on his face. It was so hot now it was almost unbearable.
Sehun sat there for another few minutes before lifting his arm up and checking his watch. It was almost ten and definitely time for him to go to bed.
Sehun sat in front of the fire waiting for it to die down just a little more. When he was sure it wouldn’t set the whole forest on fire he picked up his backpack and made his way to the other side of the fire where his tent sat.
He unzipped the tent and threw his backpack inside. He then took his shoes off and crawled inside making sure to zip the tent up all the way. He didn’t want bugs to get in.
Sehun set his back just to the side of where his sleeping bag and pillow was. He turned on a small lamp and pulled off his shirt and quickly changed. After changing Sehun unzipped the flap on the tent window. After everything was set Sehun got into his sleeping bag and zipped himself in.
Sehun shut the lamp off and closed his eyes. He listened to the crackling and snapping of the fire.
The sounds of the fire quickly lulled Sehun into sleep.
-
Sehun woke up drenched in sweat and shaking. He sucked in a deep breath trying to calm his racing heart but it didn’t work. He stayed inside his sleeping bag staring at the top of the tent. He couldn’t feel any heat from the fire nor see the light from the flames.
Sehun sat up slowly, a little scared, and peeked out the window in front of him.
The fire was completely out and it was pitch black. Sehun felt around for his lam and flipped the switch.
Light flooded the tent. Sehun shielded his eyes from the brightness with the back of his arm. The next thing he did was check his watch.
Sehun stared down at his wrist in utter disbelief. It had only been a half hour since he had crawled into his tent and went to sleep. The roaring fire he had earlier should still have been roaring.
Sehun turned his lamp back off and peeked outside at the fire once again. He was confused and fearful. There was no way the fire could’ve gone out on it’s own, there wasn’t even a single ember still burning.
Sehun turned his lamp back on. He wasn’t sure what to do now. He wanted to just forget the whole thing and go back to sleep but he wasn’t sure he would actually be able to. What if there was someone watching him? What if someone was waiting to murder him?
As the worst possible scenarios ran through Sehun’s mind he became overwhelmed. Soon he just let his impulses take hold of him.
Sehun unzipped the tent, slipped his shoes on, grabbed his lamp, and exited the tent. He zipped the tent only half way, just in case, and then walked to the fire cautiously.
The dim light from his lamp barely penetrated any of the darkness that was engulfing him. He walked slowly around the fire keeping his eyes peeled. He wasn’t sure what he expected to find but he was sure he wasn’t going to like it.
Once he circled the fire and found nothing he went to go back in his tent. He was at the foot of his tent when he swore he heard a whisper coming from the trees behind him.
Sehun spun around and searched frantically. He couldn’t see anything with his little lamp and it made the whole thing seem ten times more menacing.
“Hello?” Sehun held the lamp up hoping it would light up more area as he continued to search.
Sehun’s body stilled and he listened. That was when he heard the footsteps.
Sehun had no idea what to do so he just stood there, slightly cowering, and waited. He was pretty sure that there were no other hikers camping near him but he could always be wrong.
“Hello?” Sehun repeated hoping for a reply this time.
The footsteps grew closer and closer. Sehun could hear the snaps of twigs and leaves crunching under someone, or something’s, feet as it approached him.
“Hello?” This time Sehun’s voice was barely above a whisper because he was so scared.
Sehun stared in the direction from which he was sure the footsteps were coming from. He squinted trying to see better.
Sehun saw a light. A flashlight to be more exact. This calmed him down. It had to be a person for sure. He wasn’t going to be eaten by a bear or anything like that.
Sehun kept his lamp high up and waited as the person approached him.
Sehun watched as a man, barely, walked into the small amount of light his lamp was giving off. The man’s flashlight helped light more of Sehun’s campsite up. It also helped Sehun to see the man a little better.
The stranger was tall, about the same height as himself. He had black hair that was so black it was hard to tell where it started and the darkness began. His features were sharp and his eyes were lit up from the light.
“Um,” Sehun said staring at the man. “Can I help you?”
The man stared blankly at Sehun for a moment and then his curved up into a pleasant smile. Sehun’s heart fluttered.
The man came a little closer and stopped. “I had a long day of hiking. I saw your light and decided to come over.” The man said. He then held his hand out. “My name is Tao.”
Sehun reluctantly shook the guy’s hand. “Sehun,” he said. “So you just got here?”
Tao gave Sehun a confused look before nodding. “Yeah I saw your light a minute or so ago.”
Sehun stared at Tao for a moment grasping at something to say. He was still freaked out. It was obvious it wasn’t Tao that put his fire out. So who did?
“Is something wrong?” Tao asked looking upset. “Should I leave?”
Sehun shook his head. “No, no, it’s not you. It’s just…” Sehun trailed off. He thought he heard something, more footsteps. “Are you alone?”
Tao nodded. “Just m--” Tao broke off as he also heard what Sehun heard. He stepped a little closer to Sehun and leaned toward his ear. “Are you?” he whispered.
Sehun swallowed hard and nodded. “Someone is out there.” He said.
Tao looked utterly freaked out now. “You should pack up and head back onto the trail with me.” he was speaking a little too fast but Sehun managed to catch all the words.
“What?” Sehun asked. The way Tao sounded scared sehun. “Is there something going on?”
Tao nodded. “Just hurry up and pack. I’ll tell you what I’ve heard after we’ve left here.”
Sehun quickly took his tent down and packed it away. For once Sehun was glad he hadn’t unpacked anything but the tent and the stuff he had inside the tent to sleep on.
Sehun managed to get everything packed back up in record time and soon Tao and himself were heading in the opposite direction of the main trail.
“Where are we going?” Sehun asked as he struggled to follow Tao through the thick brush.
Tao didn’t pause to answer. “We have to get away from whoever is watching you.”
“What?”
Tao sighed. “I was at a hostel last night,” Tao said ducking underneath a large fallen tree. “Me and three other guys were sitting around the fire drinking whiskey. One of them men asked if anyone had any strange things happen while they were camping off the trail.” Tao stopped to let Sehun catch up a little then continued. “One guy said someone put his fire out and that he heard someone lurking around all night.”
“Wait someone put his fire out?” Sehun asked interrupting.
“Yeah and that wasn’t all. The guy said he was a little creeped out so he stayed in his tent till the sun rose,” Tao stopped walking and signaled Sehun to stop moving.
Sehun abruptly stopped moving.
After a few minutes standing frozen they resumed walking again. Tao didn’t speak again until ten minutes or more had passed.
“So the man woke up got out of his tent to take a leak,” Tao looked over his shoulder to make sure Sehun was keeping up with him. “When he got out of his tent he found a gruesome scene. Around his campfire, and around his tent were dead rabbits, but not just dead, mutilated.”
Sehun felt shivers run up his spine. “What the fuck.”
“that’s what I said,” Tao stopped walking and turned around to face Sehun. “That’s not all that happened though.”
Sehun stared wide-eyed at Tao. “What do you mean? Did that sicko hurt someone?”
Tao nodded. “That’s what one of the men said but it could be a rumor.”
Tao turned around and started to walk again. “How long has it been?” he asked.
Sehun looked down at his watch. “An hour or so.”
“That should be good,” Tao stopped walking. “Let’s camp here and head back to the trail in the morning.”
Sehun was still a little scared and would have honestly walked until morning but he decided to trust Tao.
Tao didn’t bother putting up a tent just grabbed his sleeping bag and placed it onto a smoother part of the ground. Sehun did the same.
“Do you think he followed us?” Sehun asked getting into his sleeping bag.
“Probably. It’s harder to track by sound at night.” Tao turned his flashlight off.
Sehun turned his lamp off and closed his eyes.
An hour passed and Sehun just couldn’t fall asleep.
“Tao are you awake?”
“Mmm.”
“Can I tell you a secret?” Sehun asked.
Tao was silent for a moment. “Sure,” he said hesitantly.
Sehun sat up and turned so he could see the outline of Tao’s form. He scooted a little closer. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t tell you the truth.” Sehun said.
Tao sat up but Sehun was already on his feet and right in front of Tao.
“Sehun?” Tao asked confused. “What are you doing?”
Sehun laughed, it wasn’t a light pleasant laugh. It was a sound that only someone truly insane could have managed to make. “I’m the man from your story.” Sehun said huskily. “It’s me Tao, I’m the killer.” Sehun began to laugh uncontrollably.
“Please don’t hurt me,” Tao was on the edge of sobbing.
Sehun stopped laughing and locked eye with Tao. “Oh I don’t plan to hurt you.”
Tao’s blood turned to ice in his veins.
Sehun cocked his head. “Oh don’t worry. I’m not going to lay a finger on you,” Sehun moved away from Tao a little. “I’m not doing this because I’m a sociopath. I’m doing this because a group of hiker raped and murdered my girlfriend.”
Tao’s eye widened in surprise. “What?” He asked.
Sehun got to his feet and moved away from Tao. “My girlfriend and I were hiking the trail together, had planned this for years. We had only been on the trail for three days when someone ripped her out of the tent as she was napping. I was getting wood for the fire, I was far away,” Sehun’s head dropped into his hands and he openly sobbed. “They raped and killed her. It happened so fast but I saw their faces as they fled.”
“Sehun…” Tao said, sympathy laced his voice.
“I’m getting my revenge,” Sehun said. “I saw all five of their faces and I will not let them leave this trail alive. They should pay for what they did.”
Tao got out of his sleeping bag and stood up. “Sehun, did you call the police?”
Sehun nodded. “They said that there wasn’t anything they could do.”
“Assholes,” Tao said.
“Tao,” Sehun spun around quickly and grabbed Tao’s shoulders. “Will you help me?”
Tao stared into Sehun’s eyes. He thought about it for a moment and then nodded. “But I won’t kill anyone.”
“You don’t have to,” Sehun said. “Just help me.”
-
The next morning Sehun and Tao set off, heading back toward the main trail. Sehun was in a decent mood and decided to tell Tao stories about his girlfriend.
Tao listened and even told his own stories.
“It’s nice to finally find someone who took my side,” Sehun said as they made it back to the main trail.
Tao wasn’t sure what he got himself into, but he was sure that he wanted to help Sehun.
The following night Sehun got his revenge in a bloody battle. It ended in Sehun’s victory all thanks to Tao. Sehun would not have lived if Tao hadn’t helped him out.
After the men were dead something strange happened. Like a ghost Sehun was gone, just disappeared into thin air.
Tao searched and searched for Sehun. He managed to finish hiking the entire trail and never saw Sehun again. He had asked other hikers but none of them had seen the man in question.
By the time Tao got home he wasn’t even sure if Sehun was real or just a figment of his imagination.
Maybe he killed those men with his own hands.
