If I look back over the last 100 years of our country I would not agree with you that the best time for "us" was the 1950's and 60's. At that time schools were still segregated by race in much of the U.S. America was in a social movement underlined with race riots, bigotry and violence. WWII was over, but it was only a brief hiatus before the Korean War began. McCarthy was just beginning his witch-hunt "Communism hearings" in D.C. in which an entire season of corruption began to infest our government's ranks. Women's rights were still barely noticed, as they were pushed out of the jobs they patriotically filled while the soldiers were overseas. Sure, television became mainstream, but many would argue that the television is directly responsible for the debasement of modern society.

I agree with you, that the common person in America hasn't had to sacrafice much (other than a few of their 1st Amendment rights and a few of their 5th Amendment rights) for this war. I was pretty much only taking exception to that one sentence. ;)
