Simple Past Tense

The simple past refers to things that have already happened, and are finished doing their thing.

The simple (простое) past (прошлое время) refers (описывает) to things (вещи, события) that have already happened (которые уже случились), and are finished (и окончены) doing their thing (делать эти вещи).

World War II was from 1939-1945.
Mom cooked supper.
I did the dishes.
Margaret aced her math exam.

Regular Verbs (Обычные, правильные глаголы)

Regular verbs are changed to the simple past by adding ‑ed to the end of the root form. If the verb already ends in ‑e, we just add ‑d.

Regular verbs are changed (изменены) to the simple past (в эту временную форму) by adding ‑ed (добавлением -ed) to the end of the root form (в конце корня). If the verb already ends in ‑e, (Если глагол уже заканчивается на -e) we just add ‑d (то добавляется только -d)

Play - played - играть - играли
Type - typed - печатать - печатали
Listen - listened - слушать - слушали
Push - pushed - толкать - толкали
Love - loved - любить - любили
Jump - jumped - прыгать - прыгали

Irregular Verbs (неправильные глаголы)

Irregular verbs follow no pattern when they change to the simple past tense. You’ll have to check a dictionary if you’re unsure as to what the past tense might be.

See - saw - видеть - видели
Build - built - строить - строили
Go - went - идти - шли, ходили
Do - did - делать - делали
Leap - leapt - скакать - скакали
Rise - rose - поднимать - поднимали
Dig - dug - копать, ковырять - копали, ковыряли

Some verbs (некоторые глаголы) don’t change (не изменяются) from their present form (из их настоящей формы).

Put - put - положить - положил
Cut - cut - отрезать - отрезал
Set - set - установить - установил
Cost - cost - стоить - стоило
Hit - hit - ударить - ударило

В вопросах и отрицательных предложениях используется еще слово do, которое в прошлом времени меняется на did.

You called Alex. - ты звонил Алексу.
Did you call Alex? - Ты звонил Алексу?
You did not call Alex. - Ты не звонил Алексу.

Last year, I traveled to Japan.

Did you have dinner last night?
She washed her car.
He didn't wash his car.

I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.
He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00.
Did you add flour, pour in the milk, and then add the eggs?

I lived in Brazil for two years.
Shauna studied Japanese for five years.
They sat at the beach all day.
They did not stay at the party the entire time.
We talked on the phone for thirty minutes.
A: How long did you wait for them?
B: We waited for one hour.

I studied French when I was a child.
He played the violin.
He didn't play the piano.
Did you play a musical instrument when you were a kid?
She worked at the movie theater after school.
They never went to school, they always skipped class.

She was shy as a child, but now she is very outgoing.
He didn't like tomatoes before.
Did you live in Texas when you were a kid?
People paid much more to make cell phone calls in the past.

I paid her one dollar when she answered my question.
You just called Debbie.
Did you just call Debbie?
