Hatsune Miku Live Party 2011

Last year’s live Miku Hatsune concert in Japan was a huge success. The fans loved it & had a great time. Sega’s staff really put their all into the show, including using a state-of-the-art transparent hologram screen to make it feel like the infamous virtual pop idol was really there. So there was little doubt that another live concert would be held again this year. It would also seem obvious that the event would be even bigger and better than last year. Unfortunately, that didn’t wind up being the case at all. In fact, the 2011 concert kinda sucked.

Video game company & record label 5pb were in charge of creating the concerts, both this year & last year. In 2010 they were wise enough to let Sega organize the concert, as Miku was their baby. As already stated, the result was a huge hit. But when it came time to put the concert out on DVD, 5pb wanted to rush it out the door. The concert producer & planner, Kuroda Takayasu from Sega, wanted to delay the release so he’d have more time to work on it & make it as good as possible. But 5pb had the final say on the matter, so they forced a rush job & released what many consider an inferior product. When Kuroda got his sampler copy in the mail, he publicly trashed it. He said he was embarrassed having his name credited on the disc & called no more than just a crappy Frisbee.

Needless to say, Kuroda doesn’t have to be worried about being credited for this year’s concert event. After last year’s incident, 5pb decided to nix Sega & threw the concert together themselves. The result wasn’t spectacular. They didn’t use a transparent screen, which resulted in a far less realistic display from last year. The 3D CGI models of the singers were also not as good as last year’s were. There was also bad camera work. But worst of all, there was a 30-minute commercial break during the concert after less than an hour after the concert began. As a result, the fans were quite displeased. Hopefully 5pb will get their act together & bring back Sega to throw the concert next year.
