Game Review: Shadow of the Colossus

Most nights, I sit next to Eric and watch him play video games. So while I'm at it, I figured I might blog about it.

The recent purchase (or rather a gift) is an adventure game called "Shadow of Colossus".

Basically this guy wants to revive this gal who's dead (no, dah). So he goes to this God-like presence in this temple ruin. And It tells him that if he kills all of 16 idol gods, who essentially resides in 16 colossi, It might think about helping him out with the gal. So the guy goes out and kills the colossi. That's it. All the guy can do is ride a horse, climb onto things, have incredible strong grip, and stab pretty well. His Ancient Sword tells him where the colossi are and where their weaknesses are. It's basically a find-a-boss, find-its-weakness, kill-a-boss kind of a game. No items to collect, no money to earn, no weapon upgrades to buy, no other enemies to kill. Very simplistic that way, yet quite addicting.

Graphics are pretty nice, and the game concept is novel and interesting. What is slightly disturbing is that every time the guy kills a colossus (and I mean, they are giants!!), tentacles grow out of its carcas and pierces the guy. He falls unconscious, and then finds himself back in the temple of God-like presence. That can't be healthy. Guess we'll find out what that means when Eric kills all 16 colossi.

The cool thing for me is that this game won't last too long!! It stays interesting at all times (unlike the forever-lasting "leveling up" of RPGs), and today's the second day of gameplay and he only has 6 more colossi to go. After this game, I guess he'll go back to Soul Caliber III...
