Theory on the Rachel-Miles-Charlie Connection
I am re-watching Kashmir and the finale because of reasons. And many things have occurred to me. I'm going to put them behind a cut. I would love your opinions and thoughts!
Miles is Charlie's father.
And here are my reasons why:
- The Miles/Bas closeness. Yes they grew up together as "brothers" joined the service and all that. But Miles and Bass refer to each other as family time and again. Except Miles has an actual brother. Which points to some distance between Miles and Ben. Maybe they were never that close? Hard to say with what we've seen. We do know that Ben called Miles right before the blackout, which I take to mean he loved his brother, even if they weren't close.
- Rachel's cryptic question to Charlie about Miles hurting her. Why would she say that? I think because there was a threat from Miles at some point to Charlie. (And "hurt" can mean cruel words, she might have just been fishing to see if Miles said anything to her about the past.)
- Bass tells Charlie there are lots of things she doesn't know about her mother. He obviously knew her pretty well in the past. She even mentions him sleeping around or some such in an earlier episode. If Charlie isn't Ben's child Bass would know.
- The Matheson children themselves. One is healthy and one is not. That could mean nothing, or it might mean that Danny's health problems are genetic and came from Ben. While Charlie is healthy because she is Miles's kid.
- The way Miles got angry when Charlie was disrespectful to Ben. Even though there was distance between them Miles was impressed that Ben was able to do the right thing and marry Rachel and be a father to Charlie. Things Miles himself couldn't (or wouldn't?) do.
- The reason Miles didn't ditch Charlie is because he sees himself in her. And after Maggie died and Charlie proclaims that everyone "leaves" her, Miles interprets it as when HE left her, before she was born.
Now here's my theory:
Rachel was involved with Miles. Anyone's guess on how serious it was. She got pregnant. And things didn't work out between them. My guess is Miles didn't want a kid, didn't want a wife, didn't want to settle down. Probably said something harsh to Rachel like "Get rid of it." or worse. This would explain how she knows Bass too. Ben marries her and raises Charlie as his own, and he and Rachel make a life together. And maybe Miles is resentful of that. His brother doing what he couldn't. It drives a wedge between them. And Miles turns to Bass as his "family" and they grow closer.
After the black out Miles goes a little crazy with power after the militia is set up and decides he wants Rachel back. Maybe he was enough of a dick to separate Rachel from Ben and the kids. People keep saying how he was before he left the militia. The whole thing about Ben and Rachel knowing about the blackout was incidental. Things do not work out with Rachel and Miles. She loves Ben and Miles gives up on the relationship, but by then it's been too long and she decides to stay in Philly. Something happens to make Miles think she died. Explosion or some such thing. So when Miles leaves the militia he goes to Ben. Maybe tells him what he thinks happened. And let's Ben know where to find him. (How else would Ben know where he is?)
And that's what I have. Please poke holes in it. Or tell me if you think it's feasible. Or whatever.
ETA: While I love discussing this with all of you, I'm afraid I can't respond to anymore comments. I have an exam on Tuesday that I need to concentrate on. I don't think I convinced anyone and I'm cool with that. (Well, except my husband. But that was easy and doesn't really count.) I do reserve the right to make a reaction post if I am correct! ;) If not you can of course tease me (gently, dear friends)! If nothing else maybe the theory will inspire more fanfic. That is never a bad thing.
