FOOTNOTES The Tale of Charlie and Miserable Miles
There once was a brave boy named Peter, who took good care of all of his brothers and sisters. He gave them food and water, kept them safe from the monsters in the woods, and taught them to read stories and hunt tasty squirrels.
One day, Peter went walking in the forest. Mean and scary men with letters burned on their arms came out from the dark and grabbed at Peter. He kicked and punched; but there were too many bad men, and they took him to their home far, far away.
Peter's brothers and sisters cried. What would they do without Peter? Who would tell them stories about before the lights went away?
Peter's little brother Michael was almost as brave as Peter, even though he wasn't as tall. He wanted to fight the bad men, but didn't know where they went!
Just then, a beautiful grown-up girl named Charlie walked by with her Uncle Miles. Miles was big and very strong, and also he had two swords. But no one ever taught Miles how to smile, so he was always miserable, even when he had fresh cooked squirrel to eat.
"Why are you crying?" Charlie asked the children.
"The burnt men took our brother and we are very sad," Michael said bravely.
"The burnt men also took my little brother," Charlie said. She made a promise that she and her uncle would go and bring Peter back, no matter how many bad men got in their way. And Miles was sooooo miserable.
When the grown-ups set off through the dark and scary forest, Michael bravely followed them. They walked a long, long way until they found a big, big boat. And Miles was sooooo miserable.
Miserable Miles knew the bad men on the big boat. He was the one who taught them to fight with their swords and bows, and he said there were too many burnt men to fight. Miles wasn't brave, but he sure was miserable.
Good thing Michael and Charlie were there to be brave for everybody. Charlie went into the woods by herself and walked and walked until the bad, burnt men found her and took her to their big boat. But what the burnt men did not know was that Charlie wanted to be taken! Charlie had a plan! Miles didn't want Charlie to go, and he was sooooo miserable.
The bad, burnt men put Charlie in a big, dark cage. One of them took fire and tried to turn her into a burnt person. But Charlie was too good.
Miles waited and waited for Charlie to come back with Peter, and the whole time he was miserable. He got tired of waiting, so he chopped down a tree and used his sword to turn it into a boat. He paddled, fast-fast-fast out to the big burnt boat and freed Charlie from her cage!
Together, they fought the bad, burnt men, but there were just so many of them! Giving up made Miles sooooo miserable.
But just when things were at their worst, Charlie saved the day. Because Charlie was so good, she could wake up the sun whenever she wanted. So she called out to the sun, "Sun, wake up. We need you."
The sun heard her... and it peeked out over the water. The burnt men saw this and were so scared they ran away, never to be seen again.
Charlie brought Peter back to his brothers and sisters, and they laughed and sang.
With her promise kept, Charlie and her uncle went off together to find her little brother.
And Miles was never miserable again.
