Ever since watching Sweeney Todd some weeks ago, I've become engrossed in the story and its incarnations.
I cannot say that I am the biggest fan of Hearn since I grew accostumed to Depp's brooding and somber version of Todd. Hearn is more vocal and eccentric but very much lacking of Depp's charisma. Plus, I'm shallow and Depp is hot. I do adore Lansbury's Lovett though. I see so many people comparing her and Carter and bitching. But these are two performances you cannot compare. They are different interpretations of a character. Where Carter is more suited to Burton's darker revision of the tale; Lansbury is over-the-top and gregarious for the Broadway style. I don't understand why either interpretation has to be wrong. They are just different. Fandom has this NEED to pick a side in everything; there cannot be coexistence. If they like one thing; they hate the other. This applies to the fanbase for Sweeney Todd as well. But I love both Lansbury and Carter. Carter delighted me in the movie, but Lansbury enchants me in the play. Where I would rather have Lansbury's "Worst Pies in London" and "Poor Thing," I adore Carter's "By the Sea" and "Not While I'm Around." Hearn is also better at delivering emotional responses to the tragic events of "Sweeney Todd," while Depp's overall portrayal pulls me more into the story. I admit I would rather watch the movie because I think some aspects of the play have to be overdone when shown before a live audience. Things move too quickly at times. But I do enjoy the end of the play for its sheer surrealism. Oh yeah and I prefer an actually young Anthony and the beggar lady in the movie.
Also on this subject, it is insane that I cannot find a full 20-track version of the soundtrack in stores. All that is available is their 17-track highlights with all the dialogue stripped. Why even bother to make another version? It's three friggin' songs. I suppose they want to sell their deluxe version for some trumped up price. This is exactly why people download music nowadays. Because CD companies are idiots! Speaking of idiots, if people hate musicals, they're going to have to be somewhat tolerant if they want to enjoy "Sweeney Todd." Uncultured swine. Hearing people call the movie "gay" just because they sing instead of talk most of the way through makes me want to punch them in the face.
I am so sick of seeing people repeat dumbass rumors on the Geass community as if they were truth. And don't even let me get into people calling Lelouch "Ruru".
