here Braven looked around at his completed work. He had been preparing this ruin for intense spell training and living for he and Rhi. All the proper spell circles and such set. Components stored and warded and beds made. He and her could easily live out here for quite a while. He looked to the sky and decided to prepare a meal for Rhi would soon arrive and training to begin.....
Rhi made her way into the castle ruins to find Braven.
The castle was always called a ruin, but truth be told, the walls of the ancient building were quite sound and would withstand much punishment. It had its secrets that few knew or understood, yet it seemed to whisper things to Rhi that it would tell no one else. Animals also seemed to speak into her mind and had since she could speak herself.
One of the windows on the upper floor of the castle, had been a chapel of sorts. A stained glass window still intact rested in the wall of the castle. The lady of the land kept to the ways of old, but respected the wishes of those living in her lands to practice or not practice as they wished with regard to religious beliefs. She drew the line at sacrifices. Although in rituals of some cultures sacrifices were accepted, they were prohibited on Navarra's grounds. Colleen would take no chance that an unwitting person was
being enticed into such a thing. The land itself would deal with someone breaking the rules.
Rhi caught up with Braven and looked about calmly examining the thing he had laid out to be used for this training.
Braven smiled as he looked to the young lass. "Greets Rhi...Before we begin trainin how bout a meal? Then I will teach some defensive spells and a few minor battle spells...These channeling shouldn't cause ye much wear. But I assure ye will begin to feel it soon enough!" He pushed a plate of cheese, bread and meat forward. "Feel free to make yourself something...Tis fresh water in the old rain basin over there." He gestures. "I must prepare a few strengthening wards so we don't accidently blast the keep apart. I rather like the place." He smiled and pick up a bag of components. "Be back soon!"
Rhi pondered the need for protective wards on the old keep, but didn't question Braven on it. "I can make 'tatoes in the fireto go with this!" Rhi said excitedly as she pulled a bundle of food from her pack. Within ten minutes in the heat of the campire, she was eating the food Braven offered as well as the potatoes. She'd made two for him and set them on his plate.
Rhi was a natural adept. The combined blood of her parents caused mana to flow freely through the child. Her mother's gift of healing was readily known, but not much was known of her inheirited traits from her father, Damon. Those remained to be seen...
Rhi munched happily on an apple for desert awaiting Braven's instruction. She'd come prepared, enough food was in her pack for a week, had utensils, a cup, clothing, a bedroll, and a small tent. None could say she was unprepared for a hardship. Rhi was ready as she would ever be.
Braven finished sealing the last ward. Most were to strengthen the keep walls so if a stray spell got away there wouldn't be a gapping hole. Some alarm spells were weaved into the mix to forewarn of visiters and lastly some restraining and attack spells triggered with but a word...just encase. He nodded with satisfaction and headed back to eat.
He returned to Rhi with a smile and quietly prepared a meal. "Thank you Rhi for the food. " They ate quietly .
After eating Braven rose and waved a hand. Any food scraps levitated to the campfire to be burned and the dishes levitated to a second water basin to soak. "Alright Rhi! Time to work!" Braven moved to a open courtyard with Rhi in tow. " I plan to teach you how to translocate firstly..Umm teleporting short in sight distances, then how to channel minor amounts of energy and form them into minor wards....Then.." Braven rambled on a list of the daily spells. "Then we might sleep or I'll tell ye some stories of the past...If ye
care to hear?"
Rhi grinned, " I love stories!!" A look of glee filled the girl's eyes at the promise of stories from Braven.
The teaching of the day went rather quickly. Rhi applied the principles that she had learned on Twilight Island to Braven's current lesson. Displacement was a spell in a similar vein to Braven's lesson.
Rhi would need reinforcement in that area, and need to be able to take objects or people with her.
At the end of the day... Rhi had earned the stories.
Braven chuckled and finished off the last bit of rabbit he had hunted down while Rhi was resting after a strong channeling. "Alright which tale shall I tell..." Braven thought for a moment. "Ahh yes...I shall tell you of the slaying of the Shadow Demon of Detatour. For many months in the city of Detatour citizens had been showing up dead. Yet there was no visible wounds other then the twisted look of terror on there face. After much strong divining magics they recalled a weak spirit. It rambled on about great fear and darkness before fading. I'll warn ye now....If ye ever recall a spirit its very hard to get much out of them. "
Braven looked to the fire as if in thought. "Well the city council put out a message to all able bodied men and women to be on the look out. Though yet more still died. Then one night a young child staggered into the local garrison station white as a ghost. He told the men there he had just seen a great shadow twist into the form of his mother and several men. The men proceed to attack his mother and removed her head....Then the head along with the men proceeded to chase the boy down. But never caught him. "
"This was the clue the city needed. A city wide search was put out but still nothing turned up. Through all this a young hero had shown up and heard of the beast. Wanting to make a name for himself and also wanting to save the people he went after the beast. Well this Shadow Beast fed on fear. It could read the minds of its targets...Create a fearful event with itself then feed on the terror of its victim till it died."
"Well this hero went out in the night. He stalked down the back streets for nights on end. Not finding anything. Then one night he saw a women flee for her life. This was his chance! He dashed down the street and saw a mass of shadow chasing the women. While she screamed "Get away! Ahh the bugs! Get them away!" The hero drew forth his holy sword and cleaved into the shadowy mass. Evil burned away from it's holy edge. The beast turned on the hero and converged into a three headed dragon! The hero had never encountered one of these's before but knew the shadows secret. He still hacked and cut through the mass until it finally dispersed. The hero went to return to the city guard to tell them of its defeat when the dark shadows reformed! It washed over the hero.......He was never heard from again...But there were no more "fear deaths." So who knows what happen to the hero or shadow beast."
With that Braven threw a few more logs on the fire for it had grown low. Shadows danced on the ruin walls as the flames grew.
Rhi grinned at looked at Braven. "That's a good story, Braven. Did I ever tell you how I got the nickname Hellspawn when I was four?"
Rhi poked a bit in her bag and offered Braven a piece of cheese and an apple. "I wanted to be dif'rent, so... I learned the blade. Not every girl does that, and not that young. I had a lucky streak one night and Daemon Satyris called me Hellspawn, because I was a child and beating all comers that night. I won at least for in a row." Sapphire eyes looked to Braven, "I wanted Da to be proud of me, wherever he was."
Braven nodded taking the offered food. "I'm sure your Pa was damn proud of ya. Your a talented lass. Your gonna go far dear. Yer a master of the sword and after I'm done ye will have mastered the arcane. Your strong lass.....Who wouldn't be proud of ye? "
A thoughtful look came to the child's face as she looked at Braven. "I'm lucky, I had two Das." Rhi went on to explain how Judas was her father of heart because he had chosen to be her father. Simply marrying her mother didn't make someone her father.
Rhi tilted her head toward the sky and pondered the tales that went along with the constellations in the heavens. The child pointed upward, "I learned 'bout that one from my older brother Garrick. It's the pegasus. I can see it here, but they can see in on Earth too." Rhi told the tale of how the beautiful creature rose from the blood of the head of the Gorgon Medusa. Others told the tale differently, but Rhi had heard from one that had been present... her father.
Braven listen to the girl weave her tale and smiled softly when she finished. "Masterfully told Young Rhiannon. I can almost envision what ye told now." Braven looked to the position of the stars through a hole in the roof that served as their chimney. "But tis time for young lasses and future hero's to be off to bed....And I do believe you fall into both ehh?" Braven gave a knowing grin and
chuckle. "Remember....Tomorrow is another hard day. You'll need the rest."
And.... he watched.
Not out of concern. Not out of worry. He knew Braven was a good and able man.
No, he watched... out of love.
From the time Draven was an infant, Rhiannon had been not just his older sister, but his partner in crime and best friend. No matter what mean things little Draven said or did, Rhi always put up with him, and loved him.
Now, now that the older Draven was in this time.... he had a lot of catching up to do. Especially now that he was "back to normal", as it were.
So, he stood in the shadows, watching his sister training, and he smiled.
As soon as Draven crossed the border of his warning spells Braven's mind flashed with his image and aura. He knew this man and let it slide. Though he did not make a note to reveal the mans presence. For one it may distract Rhi and two he didn't know if the man wanted to be revealed. He just continued to weave spells and lash out at Rhi as she deflected them with counter spells or took a occasional hit. Which Braven promptly weakened the flow of energy so just to give Rhi that lil shocking nudge that said "Hurl the counter faster!"
Long dark hair fell down Rhi's shoulders as she looked over the place where she and Braven had done her training.
She had a job to do, finding her mother's ring and it wouldn't be easy, but they needed it to protect Mara. She returned to NCU to find the parties involved.
