“Arwen, my love, what is it?”

The Queen of Gondor sighed.  “It is nothing.  How was the Council Meeting?”

Stepping behind her, Aragorn slid his arms around his wife and pulled her close.  “Lengthy.  I certainly do not begrudge Faramir this time with Eowyn and the baby, but I do not have his gift for curbing the speakers’ joy of hearing their own voices.  Now, tell me about this nothing.”

She sighed again.  “It’s the rain.  It *never* rained this endlessly in Imladris or Lothlorien.”

Aragorn tensed slightly, but responded without pause in an effort to lighten Arwen’s mood.  “Ah, but that is because the ruler of the White City has no elven ring of power.  Nor would he know what to do with it if he did.”

Arwen turned swiftly in his arms.  “Forgive me!  I am behaving badly.”

Aragorn’s eyes met Arwen’s and held her gaze steadily.  “You are not behaving badly.  You spent your life in realms of beauty and now you are forced to live in a city of stone.  I am constantly amazed with how well you cope, my love.”

“Shh.”  Arwen placed her fingers gently on his lips.  “I was forced to do nothing.  I am simply tired of the dreary weather.  It will not last forever.”

“But it makes you miss your father even more?”

Tears sprang to her eyes.  “Not only Ada.  Now that I am with child, I find I miss my mother more than I have in many years.  I am sorry, Estel.  I would not have you think I regret my choice.  My heart allowed me no other.  I would never have found joy in Valinor.  It is just the rain.  It is wet dreary and confining.  I do not believe weather has ever effected me like this before.  It must be my pregnancy.  Please do not tell Eowyn I said that.”

Aragorn chuckled.  During Eowyn’s pregnancy, she had repeatedly assured everyone that women of Rohan gave birth and were up mere hours later going about their regular routine.  Aragorn could not imagine how Eowyn would respond if she found out Arwen had complained about something as mundane as the weather and associated it her pregnancy.

Safe in her husband’s embrace, Arwen rested her head on his shoulder.  “Estel?”

“Hmm?”

“What are you thinking?”

“I am remembering something my mother told me when I was a child.”

Arwen was intrigued.  Her husband rarely mentioned his mother.  “Tell me.”

“She said the raindrops were Eru’s tears watering the plants and trees.  I cannot remember the last time I thought of that.”

“I am glad you told me.  It is something we can tell our child…a gift from your mother to him.”

“Him?”

Arwen laughed.  Perhaps the rain was not such a bad thing after all.  It had given Estel back a memory of his mother that he would not otherwise have recalled.  She was suddenly very certain that both of their mothers were smiling on them right now.
