Summary: Routine is always safe; Penny not so much.
Sheldon really appreciated routine. He’d always wake at 7 a.m., go to the bathroom, put on his clothes, eat his breakfast, and go to work, in that order. A calculated schedule kept him sane; it was safe. He really liked safe. Something disrupting his routine usually made him irritated. Very irritated.
So, when Penny moved in with him, taking Leonard’s place as his roommate, it took a great deal to adapt to the new living arrangement, starting with his morning routine. She would burst into the bathroom while he was there, to take or do whatever she needed. Because of that, they would have an argument involving her lack of respect and the time he spent in the bathroom. He tried to tell her that those discussions could be avoided if Penny respected his space, which she didn’t. She didn’t take the things he said to her really well.
In the end, Sheldon did what he always did when it came to dealing with Penny:
He adapted.
Now, he’d wait for Penny to brush her teeth when he was shaving, and to put her cosmetics on while he’d finish dressing. Sometimes he’d already be dressed when she started applying her make-up, but he’d wait and watch her while she performed her task. He appreciated the precision in Penny’s hand, the graceful way she handled the cosmetic against her skin. He usually liked the result of her work, like today.
“Let’s go, Moonpie,” she said, smiling when she finished. He sighed, feeling exasperated. He tried to tell her that only Meemaw could call him that, but closed his mouth when he felt her hand on his upper arm, hurrying him along.
Sometimes, he hated the power Penny had over him. Most of the time, he was glad she was there.
