Supplement and book recommendation request

My husband gets his health care from the VA, and I don't have insurance, so I've been looking more and more into vitamins and supplements to cure what ails us for a very long time. I'm hoping to kick it up a notch, and I need some suggestions.

1) A book. When I was a kid, I read the Vitamin Bible and found it absolutely facinating. I'm looking for a tome, if such a thing exists, of what to take for what ailments. I'm thinking macrodosing, more than I could rationally consume from food alone, for health and disease control/reversal. Websites are good too, but I prefer books. I'm very tactile, I like touching the paper and holding the book. Call me old fashioned.

2) A local source. In the short term, I'm looking for a readily available national brand of supplements I can just walk into a store and purchase that are of high quality. Bonus points if the brand is also veg*n friendly, though that's not strictly required. I wouldn't call where I live urban, but we have specialty vitamin shops, GNC and others, major drug and grocery store chains, and there's a Whole Foods on the other side of the county if that's where I really need to go.

3) A cost effective source. I'm frugal, and I know that buying online is probably the way to go from a cost stand point. While I want to be able to run out and just grab more of stuff, at some point I'll find an equilibrium and I can order most of what I need a month in advance.

Anecdata and personal opinions welcome.

EDIT: I am not a veg*n, but my 18 y/o daughter who lives at home is. I can't make her take anything, but I'd like the option of offering supplements to her if they are available and reasonably priced. A veg*n option would be nice, but is not strictly required.
