A question for those of you who consume raw milk or raw milk products. Do you give them to your kids? How old were your kids when you started to? Why do Americans die after eating unpasteurised cheese, but this never seems to happen in France, where most/all cheese is unpasteurised?

Basically, what's the story with raw milk?

food: raw, safety

I'm prefacing this with a disclaimer that the cows in question were "home cows," possibly one or at most three to a farm, and thus were without a doubt healthy and unstressed.

In my grandparents' home villages in Europe--in fact, in most village/town farms in Europe, the families drink milk directly from the cow, give it to their children like that, to their babies, etc., and I've rarely known healthier people than my extended families there. I personally don't like milk on its own, but I'll drink some milk from their farms any day! There's no comparison. Pasteurization, when you can get the milk fresh, makes no sense to me because of this-- it's like taking a fresh piece of fruit, canning it, and then opening the can to eat it. If you're going to ship that fruit far away or save it for months later, then sure, makes sense, otherwise--come on. If you know the cow is healthy and the milk hasn't been put in dirty containers, then be assured that milk is just as safe--in my opinion safer--than its pasteurized counterpart. There's nothing mystically unhealthy about non-pasteurized milk in and of itself.
