My husband wants to quit smoking

My husband, Adam, will turn 30 on July 8th. He says that for his birthday, he wants the patch to help him start quitting cigarettes. And since the patch is expensive, I'd like to know if there are any alternatives. He says that he doesn't believe there are any herbal supplements that will help, but if I can find and back one up, he is willing to try.
Years ago, Adam was able to quit just by sheer willpower. He could just not smoke for weeks or months at a time and not be bothered. But he says that now it's harder since he has not put forth that willpower in a long, long time. I believe that I can help him get that power back. Any ideas?
He says that he is doing it for himself, but he is also doing it for me, who is asthmatic and also allergic to cigarette smoke. He is also doing it for our asthmatic cat, Tuesday (even though smoking has been banned in the house anyway). I am so, so proud of him for wanting this. I have never bitched or complained and he knows it. And I think he is finally proud to do it.

I am not anti-smoking at all, as I feel that people can do as they wish. I just ask that my friends blow their smoke away from me. But I have to admit, hearing my husband of just over a year tell me, "Help me quit" is really refreshing and wonderful.
