I like edo-komon(江戸小紋) kimono.
Here is a picture I wore it in.
You might see I wore plain kimono. But they are called iromuji(色無地). I didn't wear iromuji on this picture. What do you think about the difference between iromuji and edo-komon?
Look at this picture.
This is an enlarged picture of that kimono. You can see the very small patterns, can't you? This is the very thing, edo-komon.
You might feel like that, "Why do they have such small patterns? I can't see patterns unless I get close to them!".
Yes, that's the point. Edo-komon has a long history. Now, let me tell you.
Edo-komon has the origin of samurai's kimono. In Edo(Tokugawa) period (
Wikipedia), samurai wore kimono called kamishimo(裃
Images). Daimyo(大名
Wikipedia) were proud of their luxurious kamishimo then, therefore
the Tokugawa shogunate made regulation not to be extravagant.
For that reason, edo-komon was born. It has a quite small pattern, and you can't see its pattern unless you get close to it. So it looks plain and not luxurious, but actually it has elaborate designs needed professional skill of craftsmen.
These patterns became each daimyo's family pattern. They were forbidden to wear except these families. I think it was like tartan setts of kilts in Scotland, don't you think? On the other hand, ordinary people in Edo(Tokyo) imitated that, they made patterns of daily things like foods, kitchen utensils, hoes, flowers, etc. And they had fun with patterns for ordinary people.
These patterns are called sanyaku(三役).
鮫 ; same (This pattern was used by
Tokugawa family in Kishu)
通し ; tooshi (This pattern was used by Toda family in
Sinshu)
行儀 ; gyougi (a small polka‐dot pattern)
They are the three of the most dignified patterns in edo-komon. You can wear them as a formal dress. Today, we, who aren't samurai XD, can wear them. Unfortunately, there aren't samurai any more even in Japan XD
You can see more patterns of Edo-komon
here if you'd like to.
Edo-komon look simple indeed. You can take various obi(a belt for kimono) on edo-komon. It's like you can choose many kinds of accessories on a simple dress. Besides it looks chic (粋; iki in Japanese). That's why I like them!
