Oh now, you really didn't think he'd pass this up, right? pastaitalia February 12 2010, 01:55:47 UTC
Sneaky sneaky... Okay, so Feliciano didn't do sneaky well. Especially when he was humming something quietly and carrying a small cake with only a few candles (all that would fit comfortably were five), lighter in his pocket.

If Kiku thought he was escaping at least a minor celebration he had another think coming. Grinning, he all but burst through the door, immediately starting in on (a rather subdued, it was almost naptime) version of 'Happy Birthday To You'.

"Look, I brought cake!" he laughed as he set it down on the table by his friend's lunchbox.

Isabella carried a paper bag containing a sandwich she had just bought at one of the local stores up the stairs. It was break. Finally! She had no problems with working long hours, but she needed to eat--especially since she tended to forget that this breakfast thing existed. She wasn't sure how much time she had left so she figured she would eat in the building--but not at her desk. That's what the break room was for.

She saw that someone was already there, and...that one person she met a while back...Feliciano? was sneaking up on them. She followed them into the room and lightly patted Feliciano on the shoulder.

"Hey! It's nice to see you again," she said. She looked over at what he had just put down. "What's the occasion?" She pointed at the cake.

Kiku practically jumped from his seat as people emerged in the break room. Apparently he wasn't the only one taking a late lunch today. He turned his head to look at Feliciano, his cheeks turning slightly pink as he locked eyes with the Italian male who was singing for him.

"Ah! Don't sing it so loud! Eeeh..." He looked around shyly, flailing his arms some. "F-Feliciano. What are you doing here-- Cake? Y-You got me a cake? You really didn't have to!" The 29-year old male blushed a bit harder, and this was only intensified as the female from upstairs joined in on the conversation.

"T-There is no occasion! Nothing important is going on at all, I assure you."

Ludwig had known about Kiku's birthday for a few weeks now. He had marked it in his daily planner the year he had first found out, and always made a point to wish the older man a happy birthday or give him something small in celebration. After lunch he had headed to his office but, finding it empty, decided to back track to the break room ( ... )

Kiku's dark brown eyes were focused on the cake, his embarrassment obvious in his movements and in the off hue that had appeared on his cheeks. It wasn't that he was embarrassed about having a birthday or anything else silly like that, he just didn't know very well how to handle being the center of any attention, especially when it was deserved. Hearing a new voice in the room, his eyes snapped back to the doorway and his face light up some, having not seen Ludwig outside of a meeting in quite some time since they had busied themselves with this company.

"L-Ludwig... Ah, I am sorry I am eating lunch so late-- I was swamped with phone calls," as usual, Kiku mistook his German friends words and apologized for himself, often forgetting his own position as a director. "Forgive my tardiness." He appreciated the nod greeting that had been established between them, it was simple, calm, and held a wordless deep meaning.

He nodded a bit harder in Ludwig's direction, obviously happy to see him despite his fumbling and panicked expression.

Feliciano grinned up at Ludwig, hands in his pants pockets as he rocked back on his heels. "Come on, it's Kiku's birthday, can't we just overlook the time for a little while and celebrate?"

Really, it was 90% wanting to celebrate Kiku's birthday with him- it was what friends did, right? And Kiku was one of his best friends, after all! But that last 10% was him reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally not wanting to do the last of that paperwork before time for siesta. It was so boring. He'd much rather be partying with Kiku and Ludwig and everyone.

Ludwig was only mildly surprised when Kiku apologized - it had been a while since they had spoken outside of a meeting - and held up a hand to indicate it wasn't needed. He hadn't been speaking to him, after all, but the two underlings in the room.

His attention turned to Feliciano as the Italian spoke to him, and a disapproving frown settled over his features. "You're not getting paid to eat, Feliciano, and that's exactly what will happen in..." He paused and checked his watch. "...six and a half minutes. If you want to celebrate wait until after work hours are over."

Kiku smiled some, amused by the strict time keeping habit that the German held to this day. He bowed his head at Feliciano, knowing that Kiku could pardon him and allow him more time to take a break-- but then there was no one upstairs running PR and making things were in line.

"Perhaps after work is better... We can meet here and eat the cake, then I will head home. We don't need to celebrate something as mundane as my birthday." He blushed slightly and nodded his head, figuring he didn't want to be more of a sap on anyone's time than he already was.

"But Kiku, birthdays aren't mundane!" Feliciano pouted, leaning on the table. Hell, if he had to go back to working, he wasn't going to do it without knowing he had something to look forward to at the end of the day. "We have to have a party for you. The question of where can be answered later, but for now I guess it's back to work." With a little smile and a wave, Feliciano left the break room, already plotting.

Ludwig had to admit he knew how Kiku was feeling about his birthday. To him it really wasn't -too- much to celebrate. Sure, it was the day he was born, but it really wasn't that rare an occurrence, and the only thing it was good for was for keeping track of your age.

As Feliciano seemed to decide a party after work was in store, the German couldn't help but feel it was partly his 'fault' for suggesting it. He stepped aside to let Feliciano leave and entered the room a bit further, tucking his hands into the pockets of his jacket.

"I'll make sure it's just Feliciano," he said quietly, knowing how his friend was about as fond as parties as he was. "And I'll keep it quick. Gott knows we all have work tomorrow, and knowing him he'll try to keep you up all night."

Isabella blinked and looked back and forth between the speakers. She was quite startled when her Boss came into the break room but, hey, there was no rules saying that her superiors couldn't come into the break room. If there was such a rule, she would have found it rather silly.

"So it's a birthday?" she threw out into the room from what she had gathered. "That's great! Happy birthday to you!" she said to the man who was there first. She had seen him around and recognized him, but never really had the chance to talk to him. "I hope you have a wonderful day, and, Director Beilschmidt, I'll get right back to work when I'm done eating!"

She was quite confident in her abilities of speed-eating, after all.

Kiku looked at the decorated cake Feliciano was leaving, thankful to see it had been obtained from an Italian bakery and now an American one, of which would have come with some alien hues best left to a box of crayola crayons. Letting his eyes wander up to follow Feliciano out the door, he waved shyly to wish him off, his soft voice carrying on behind him.

"A-Ah, we will meet in my office after my conference call. It should be done at 4:30-- is what I have heard, anyway. I will return to the office as soon as my lunch has been finished, so in the mean while, make sure order is kept around the office. Do not hesitate to come and get me if problems arrise." His mind then went to the woman to his left, turning to greet her calmly.

"Ah, thank you, Ma'am. I hope you too have a wonderful day," he said as he bowed his head in her direction, watching her run off to eat like Kobayashi (See: Hotdog competition god). Truth be told, Kiku was very good at public relations, but that was when he was Director Honda. When he was Kiku, he was like a ( ... )

Ludwig nodded as Isabella reassured him she'd get back to work. He had been directing his words towards Feliciano more than her, since he knew he kept his own underlings on the straight an narrow, and the bright woman had yet to fail him in anything he had asked her to do. Eating quickly shouldn't be a problem.

Glancing back at Kiku, he frowned a bit as his friend reminded him of the fact that, out of the office, they had all rarely seen one another. There had been a dinner with Feliciano to catch up, but that was one time among many. He knew it was important to keep up social connections, but it was something he had always had to force himself to do.

"It has been busy. Not that that's a bad thing, of course." He was quiet for a moment, averting his eyes as he attempted to be something more than a workmate. "It has been...a while since we've...done anything not work-related. I...suppose it will be...nice. To take a break from the professional atmosphere."
