The short story “The Machine Stops” had numerous themes in common with the novel “A Brave New World”. One of which was the whole idea of taking pills to avoid feeling emotions. In “The Machine Stops” they took Taloids and in “A Brave New World” they took Stomos both of which stop people from feeling natural emotions such as anger, depression, anxiety, and so on. In these societies it seems as if the whole point of the society’s existence relies on human beings behaving in an unnatural, inhuman way. They do not want people to experience emotions or become too close to one another, because it can jeopardize the structure of the society.
In the “The Machine Stops”, like in “A Brave New World”, promoted human interaction being limited. However, it seems like in the “The Machine Stops” they wanted human isolation and did not like human interaction in person, but it was fine to talk to each other over the phone, where you could only imagine the person. In “A Brave New World” they allowed human interaction, and having sexing with multiple partners, but it was wrong to have a deep emotional connection to one person.
In both societies there was at least one person who felt that they preferred to feel emotions even the bad feelings. They longed for experience and human connection, which in a way shows that as human beings we have a desire or a natural instinct to feel, experience, interact, and touch. We have this desire to truly live. In both these societies it seems as if no one is really living their lives, they only exist.
