I just finished a new album. This one is called "Anti-Social Loner Freak" and it is my first punk rock album.
This album was a long time in the work for me, as I’d wanted to record punk music for a very long time. Being shy and a loner growing up, however, made it difficult to find a group of people to work with musically. I mainly just poked around on instruments myself and experimented with low-quality tracking/recording equipment. Several years ago, however, I finally just decided to take the plunge and build my own home recording studio. After making electronic music for a while, I decided to return to the roots of my youth and record a punk rock album by myself (DIY! :p). Granted, there are limitations that come with performing all functions of an entire band and it can be quite a daunting process. Just the producing, mixing, and mastering part of music creation is an art form all onto itself, which I am still constantly learning about (especially in the realm of live recording). So, while the overall production value may not be up to snuff with a standard commercial release, I can just use the excuse that a raw and under produced recording is more punk rock! Hahaha.
Originally, I had intended this album to be a very angry and hardcore album about how much I pretty much hate the world even though I’m no longer a teenager, but the more I wrote and recorded, the more fun and tongue and cheek the album became. I guess that kind of says something about what really goes on inside someone’s head creatively as opposed to what they perceive goes on before they really flesh it out. It’s pretty diverse album (street punk, pop punk, hardcore, thrash metal, spoken word, doo wop, acoustic, etc.) and still represents a few serious viewpoints I have on various social issues/behavior, but it is also quite comedic in parts.
Despite my limitations as a producer and as a musician, I am still rather pleased with the way this album came out. I hope that the 19 year old spikey haired kid that I used to be would get a kick out of it anyways.
