This is to a specific group of people: my fellow Owls.
Recently, so many Owls have been protesting the inner workings of Temple University. They’re “not happy with it,” it’s not giving them “what they want.” It’s high time these “unsatisfied” customers reevaluated why they’re unhappy.
These certain individuals don’t appreciate Temple’s name - the reputation that it has. Why have we forgotten? Why did we even choose Temple in the first place? It is because, among many factors, we knew it had a reputation for outstanding academia and provided its students with notable credentials. The Temple name is recognized by employers across the nation and it certainly gives an applicant an added credibility.
Where does this credibility come from? It actually comes from one of the reasons why these unsatisfied students are denouncing Temple. The core course load. We complain that it mandates we take courses that we will “never use again in our lives.” And you know what? I agree. Nonetheless, if attended and worked at properly, it provides a student with a well-roundedness of topics - something that employers would like to have in their employees.
It is important to remember that Temple is not the only college to take advantage of students and their wallets. As our dear friend Gun Show always quipped, “Temple says, ‘Bend over, Gun Show.’” But I defy any one of you to find a college that doesn’t do the same.
Do not respond to my praises of Temple with a cheap Ivy League parry. Of course the Ivy Leaguers are a tad better (in theory). But out of us, who has ever actually been to one of these Ivy League-ers? Besides, they want their students to graduate with flying colors, as to keep their track-records intact. Schools like Temple challenge their students so that they can pass them through knowing they deserved it; thus, Temple and schools like it are increasing their standards.
Since when was an institution upping its standards a bad thing? All the people who have complained about Temple are the same people that I would assume to propagate this practice more than anyone.
In closing, we only get out of Temple what we put into it.
So to all you unhappy Owls, you are free to fly away. Fly, fly away.
