A lone fire sprinkler hangs near the ceiling, unnoticed by me every day on my way into work. The supply pipes are painted to match the color of the staircase and the rusted metal hides neatly behind; sticking out just enough to catch the eye of passers by without garnering much attention. I'm glad for this sprinkler head. Its silent presence is comforting. Fires come without warning- there's no telling when catastrophe may strike- but when it comes, you can be sure that this little, unnoticed sentinel will be ready to protect those of us who are within the walls of the Maritime Building.
