wrapping up the year with a shiny bow

Happy, happy birthday to lyrian! And a happy new year to everyone else.

2006 has been a very interesting year. A lot has changed in my life. On LJ, I have made a lot of new and interesting friends. And with Battlestar Galactica, I have become more active within a fandom than I had ever been. I look forward to many more life and LJ changes in 2007, some of which are planned ahead--many of which are unforeseeable at this moment.

I cleaned out the old year literally, as I was in the midst of a massive bedroom rebooting when midnight ticked out. My room is still littered with detritus, but most of it will be going out in the trash in the morning. Yey! I'm a minimalist at heart, you see.

I'm bored with the Alphabet Movie Meme because there don't seem to be any interesting movies (that I haven't seen) starting with the letters I have left (B,G,O,Q). So here's a list of the movies I saw and gave a heartfelt thumbs-up to (that were released either in theatres or to DVD in 2006).

Accepted
Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Devil Wears Prada
Hoodwinked
King Kong
Mission Impossible III
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Red Eye
Superman Returns
Pride and Prejudice
V for Vendetta
Walk the Line

And I only read one more book in 2006:
Storm Front by Jim Butcher. Hey, I see why the Harry Dresden series is so popular. Terrific concept, well executed. I'm not a big fan of magic--the kind with wizards and magic spells, that is--but it was used so well in this story, I can't help but like it. Oddly (only because I don't bother trying to solve things even when I read a mystery story), I saw most of what was coming before it happened, but I am always far less interested in puzzles than I am in how a character responds to them, and Harry Dresden is such a fascinating character (I very much enjoyed being inside his head) I honestly could hardly put this book down. I think I'll continue reading the series. I'm interested in the TV show premiering on SciFi this month, now, as well.

Also. Bravo ran reruns all day on Saturday of

Well, I've found a new marathon show. You know those shows you don't watch week-by-week but when somebody plays a whole string of episodes, you binge on them? Yeah. Where West Wing, Judging Amy, ER, and pretty much every USA show has gone before, Friday Night Lights now treads. Of course, like those other shows, I have very little to say about it. I pretty much laughed off all the talk about this show being for both fans of football and non-fans, because every single time I tuned in to see what all the fuss was about, they were either playing a game or some teenager was bed-hopping, and neither of those things thrills me at all. But as it turns out, it really *is* well done, the football theme provides a focus and a catalyst around which all the characters revolve--the characters who are not fans, don't "get" the whole football thing, or are shut out of that aspect of the community for one reason or another are equally important--and all of these characters are extremely compelling. The boys are terrific, but more surprisingly, their female characters match Battlestar Galactica for sympathy and realism. So, yeah. Mark me down as convinced.
