I just saw the
first RSC promo shot of David Tennant as Hamlet. I am actually much more excited about that production than anything to do with Doctor Who. Nothing beats two of my favourite actors in an RSC production of my favourite Shakespeare play. Nothing.
I'm so curious what it will be like! Looks like it could be set in 1800-something. I loved the whole
Stalin's Russia thing they did with 'Macbeth' last year. And then 'King Lear' was kind of period, and so gorgeous! It was at the New London Theatre, which is HUGE. And the stage is round, with three walk ways leading up to it through the auditorium. Which makes for really cool entrances. But anyway, at the back of the stage, they had those giant stone arches draped with red velvet and the lighting was soft and golden. And as Lear slowly loses his mind and the kingdom begins to fall apart, the drapes are taken away one after the other and you see all the cracks underneath, and the lighting becomes harsher. And in the end it just looks like a ruin, even though the set essentially didn't change. I loved that. Also, Sylvester McCoy (
who played the Fool,
and who also played the 7th Doctor :D) spent a good 10min being a hanged man and dangling high up stage left. It can't have been comfortable, so I was well impressed with that, haha. (Less so with him playing the spoons. Again. Does he have to play the bloody spoons in everything he's in? Is that the sole foundation of his career, really?)
And I hope that annoying tit who played Cordelia (Lear's youngest daughter) isn't in 'Hamlet', because I was glad to see her character die in 'King Lear' and she completely ruined 'The Seagull' for me. It would also be awesome if Kate Fleetwood was Gertrude (Hamlet's mother) because
she was amazing as Lady Macbeth. One question remains. Okay, so Patrick Stewart didn't get his kit off in 'Macbeth'. (He did though in another play I saw a couple of years ago, and boy, that man is well fit! o.o) But Sir Ian McKellen got his (very impressive) todger out for half a scene in 'King Lear'. So how crude exactly will Hamlet be when he's attempting to scare off Ophelia? ;D Questions, questions. Can't wait to see it.
Speaking of the RSC, I still need to go and see the History Cycle and I can! Bwahaha! £5 tickets for under 25-year-olds = Best. Thing. EVER! And seeing how next week is half term, there shall be much theatre going. Eeee! :D 'Richard III' is supposed to be really bloody and
gory... So, now that I've bored everyone to sleep, good night!
