So I was out shovelling snow when I noticed something small and dark trying to run up a pile of snow. It was a mouse that, apparently, had somehow managed to wake up from hibernating. After abandoning its pretty fruitless attempt at climbing the pile, it curled up in a ball in the snow and just... lied there.
Soft-hearted as I am, once I was finished with the shovelling I went inside and told my mother how sorry I felt for the little thing. Even more soft-hearted as my mother is, she immediately put on her clothes and went out to get the mouse with me on tow. Cue epic rescue mission where we both tried to catch the creature (this was just as most people were coming home from work, so we got some weirded out looks from our neighbours). Once successful, we sacrificed a piece of cloth, some cotton and a piece of bread and cheese to make something that can hopefully pass as a nest under our porch. We then shovelled some snow between the doorsteps to shelter the nest from the wind and the neighbour cats.
Now we're both hoping the little fellow can manage to go back to sleep, provided the sheer terror of our rescue operation didn't scare it to death.
big damn heroes,
for great justice,
we're such saps,
