These days, if you visit the Pike Place Market around lunchtime, you might be treated to the atmospheric tunes of the mysterious Erhu busker. This is a man who plays the Erhu, a 2-string violin of Chinese origin. The resonator is the size of a soup can, which sits in the player's lap, and is attached to a wooden rod that rises above his head. The melodies are so nimble, it's amazing that there are two strings. The musical scale is full of fifths, so it has a floating quality, seemingly not anchored to any note, neither major nor minor. It's hard to tell if he's improvising, or playing traditional songs. EIther way, it sound like the soundtrack to an epic movie set in rural China.
Give him lots of money, please.
