"The Last of Us" - Episode 1

Feb 20, 2023 03:59

Since everyone is raving about this show based on a video game series I haven't played, I've decided to take a look and see if it's any good.

Unlike with my Game of Thrones watch, I'm not going to recap the episode, but just write notes.  I think I started that formula with Game of Thrones, but then it turned into more of a recaps solely because I needed to write a recap to keep these characters straight. (Seriously, it helped, even though I had to look up the characters later to find out their real names.)

There probably will be spoilers for the episodes.  Right now we're at Episode 1.  I'll hide this under a cut just in case.

  • So, apparently the first thing that comes to mind, after the obvious opening is that this show takes place in an alternate past. It's 2003. As someone who was around in 2003 and had Livejournal a year afterward, I can see where this is looking on that time with rose-colored lenses.
  • Pedro Pascal, you do not look like you are in your 30s.
  • I have to admit, the scenes where everything is falling apart in society is well done. I actually like the idea that despite trying to break the mold, the heroes end up being imperiled by their own actions.
  • The uncle disappears and the teenage girl is killed, leaving the Mandalorian without his Clan. Apparently, this is not the way.
  • Oh, wait, there's another timeskip and now we're in the post-apocalyptic future/present. Great there are more people and terms I have learn the names of. Apparently, this is some Mad Max/Attack on Titan/28 Days Later hybrid situation where you have to stay in the walls so you don't get infected.
  • There's this heartbreaking scene where a boy comes in. He seems to not be infected. He's taken to be tested and is told he'll be given a shot, only for the next scene be for his body to be thrown in the crematorium.
  • There's a lot things I don't understand about Fireflies and such...but the end result is the Mandalorian and this lady have to escort a girl out of the walled town elsewhere.
  • And the girl is just like that girl in the Resident Evil: Apocalypse movie, I guess. I'm guessing she has the cure or whatever.

Despite my notes the show itself seems cool, but a little dense in terms of lore.
