Trampoline and pool on the deck

June 4, 2024
Canadian kids still have a few more weeks of school, but today is the day when school used to always be out when I was growing up, on the 4th of June.

I got up at five and the sun was quite red on the horizon, or at least the sunrise colours were. I tried to ignore it after taking a picture and go back to sleep; However, I was up at about 530.

Daniel was outside killing bugs that were around his kittens. So I sat outside and covered myself against the dampness with a bath towel that was there.

He went into his greenhouse to water his plants, so I went down into the valley and looked inside. It’s pretty impressive.

I sat and filmed the kittens and called it kitten joy. They were climbing up on me. They have very sweet faces.

I’m going to give them away on Facebook marketplace.

Daniel helped me roll the trampoline away from the garden bed and up onto the deck. He helped me put the legs back on. I’m glad the deck is so big. Ava said we should also put a pool up there.

So yesterday I bought a pool at giant tiger and have been rolling the box up onto the deck. I hope to have it ready for when the children come today.

I finally got around to weeding the bed alongside the deck. They were big huge motherwort plants.

I also weeded out the mustard garlic. I see that all that pruning on the grapevine made a huge difference. There are tiny grape bunches everywhere.

I see that the roses are starting to bud, so I cut the branches with the buds on off and put them in a mug in the house.

I also cut three irises and put in the house. I never have done this before.

The rose chaeffers really are terrible, they eat all the roses as soon as they open. Maybe if I cut them and bring them inside, perhaps we won’t have the rose Schaeffers, and we can enjoy the roses.

Daniel has a wonderful bug zapper which is called ‘the executioner’. It’s amazing. The ones at the dollar store are made up of three sets of wire grids.

The one he bought, however, has bars. If these cheaper ones, get knelt upon or anything, they don’t kill anything. His snaps when he hits bugs.

Incense is wonderful for keeping the bugs away, however.

Daniel went down to the moat and caught two fish. One was a perch.

I weeded the garlic mustard out of the grapes and I’m so pleased to see how many little bunches of grapes are going to be on these vines. I pruned them back severely last winter. So they are quite impressive to me now.

I tried to dig a hole so that I could put a post in for the edge of the grapevine. It’s not very deep yet. I am not working at it very often.

I have to read the instructions for this pool so I can set it up.

There’s a bit of cloud cover coming across, that will keep the temperature down. It’s pretty hot in the sun already at 10 o’clock.

I’m glad I rototilled my flower bed with the gigantic flowers in it, whose name my forget every year and have to look up.

The kittens like sleeping on the wool mat behind the chair.

I figured out how I’m gonna go about getting these cats spayed. When I go to pick up Abey next Tuesday, I will say I’m picking him up after 430, and then I will go at six in the morning and take the cats to be spayed and pick them up before I pick up Abe and come home.

Perhaps during the day I’ll go hang out by the water. The St. Lawrence is a beautiful river. Maybe I’ll take the 1000 islands tour. That would really be fun.

Daniel and Anna just brought down two of the orange containers with the tomato plants in it. I’m so thrilled. Those are going to be awesome little yellow tomatoes.

Willem opened some cardboard boxes for me and we covered the area where the pool is going to be, on deck boards, with cardboard.

We did that so that if any of the boards are uneven, that the cardboard will cover it. I tried to have it all Covered, with no gaps in between the cardboard, so that it’s a smooth fit inside the pool. Maybe I should tape them together.

Well, that wore me out.

I was gonna go see Lori today, but I think I should get this pool set up before the kids come today.

It’ll take quite a while for the water to warm up, as it is from the well deep down. It looks like I am going to have use chemicals in the water to keep the pool from turning green.

I wonder if there’s anything that is safe that I could use, that isn’t pool chemicals.

The children came and we’re so thrilled to be here. I had been sick and they hadn’t been here for couple weeks. And they missed it.

They were thrilled that there was a pool and the trampoline was on the deck beside it.

As I was filling it, Daniel came down and checked and found out that in the instructions it says do not put it on a deck

He also figured out how much the deck can take and how much the pool would be. So we figured out that 10 inches was the maximum weight that could be put on the deck so they could get in and wade around in the few inches of water that were on the bottom when they got here.

Ben Came with grandson. So they all played happily. They swung on the swing and threw pillows at each other.

A deer came and ate at the deer block beside the swing. I could see him from the deck where he stood on Kingfisher Lane beside fiddlehead Pond

I thought it was a female, but when Ben and the boys and I went down to check out iceberg pond, the deer stood in the car trail and didn’t move. At one point he came towards us.

I was so surprised to find not only a that it was a buck but also that it was so tame. We got a stones throw away from it. It was unbelievable.

He didn’t seem to mind us at all. He continued to eat, even though we were so close to him. Perhaps he could hear us from the house all the time, so he didn’t think too much of it, if he was seeing us now as well. I’m so surprised at how tame the deer have become around here.

Ben and I went for a paddleboat ride on iceberg Pond. Daniel came down with his fishing rod and I trolled around the lake with it. It went down about 6 feet and was still above the height of the weeds.

The water was so clear. I could see the weeds as clear as if there was no water. Also no fish. There were minnows at the mouth of the pond.

The children were so happy to play together. They were so happy to be here. I’ve beenn sick so they didn’t come.

Ben came bringing a whole bunch of food as usual. I guess there is more than they want to eat.

Enna cooks so much food here, I didn’t need any extra food. The children of course love the donuts that he brought.

He also brought a bathing suit for grandson, which can stay here. Mommy is going to send bathing suits for the other two when they come next.

We sat on the sun trap deck in the shade with the screen around us. He has these great zappers which are called the executioner and cost a small fortune.

A deer was eating from the food block beside the swing on the other side of the pond for so long, that when We went down to the platform to see what it was like down there, the deer was still there when we arrived at the top of Kingfisher Lane.

Ben me and two boys walked toward the deer, and he looked up and then looked back and ignored us. We got so close that we could see his grey velvet-covered antlers and his face so clearly. He was probably still 30 feet away. we stopped and chatted a bunch. While he looked curiously at us.

Ben was working on killing the bugs around us, and the deer had no worries about us at all. As we continued forward again, he continued to ignore us, and then without putting his tail up and bounding away, he just jumped a few times into the alders.

I was so amazed at the velvet on his antlers. They were two prong.

I’m glad nobody’s gonna tell me that I should have him spayed

Ben & I sat on the platform and enjoyed the view of Iceberg Pond. It was too hot to work hard.

Dan came and set up his fishing rod. He handed it to me when I was in the paddle boat with Ben. The top of the weeds, thru the perfectly clear water was about 6’ below the surface.

We tried to paddle to the shore but didn’t get close enough. Ben had one foot on shore when the boat tried to float out, and as I tried to paddle forward, it hit his leg and he fell in, partway.

We need a rope to pull in with. He says we need a simple dock.

It was 930 before Ben and GS headed back to town. I drove the other ones back home. My knees were good enough that I could go upstairs as well.

I’ve been listening to the news about India, and have been surprised to see how strong a work ethic the people of Mumbai and even the people in the slums have. They go to work even when it’s 52°C

But even in the slums, people make a living by gathering up the plastic trash on the roads and here and there and recycling it. one man has 20 employees and has moved out of the slum and into a nice place a real house.

It’s so different to see how they deal with life there where they have so little and are so crowded together in such tiny rooms. I am so spoiled. and I am so blessed.

I feel especially blessed that I live in Canada where all the world is heating up it doesn’t get very hot here. It’s too hot for me, but I’m not gonna die from it

And I can run an air conditioner without shutting down the system.

I went out and opened the drain for the pool. I will try to move it off the deck tomorrow.

I’ve been thinking about having a sprinkler system on the soffits of the house. Something to keep the house protected if we have a fire.

It’s supposed to get hot here tomorrow. 29Celsius, I think.
