We made it to Leeuwarden where we met Willem’s dad’s wife. She was so happy to see us! It was lovely to be there with her. We had a nice lunch of bread, meat, cheese and spreads. We had the Frisian bread, a sweet bread, like raisin bread. …bolle. Afterwards we went for a walk along the canal, which has lots of long ships going down it. The ducks looked like mallards, but their green areas were brown and their chests were white. The upper end of their beaks were also white. The female had a white bib but was a dark duck.

We also saw some ducks that were completely brown and much smaller. The chickadees pictured in the little statues aren’t just like our chickadees, they look slightly different.

She has a lovely yard and a nice small house that is easy for her to keep up. She’s 80 now! She rides her bicycle every day and is in perfect health and excellent shape. The gardens which are the front and back yards were just lovely with the perennial plants, bushes and trees.

We had tea time with her, I had hot chocolate. She served us some cake that was the Fresian cake that is served whenever there is a special occasion. It was called Oranjekoek. It was like a thin layer of gingerbread, marzipan, another thin layer of gingerbread and frosting with sweet whipped cream on the top.

We left around 4:30 so we could make it over to our friends’ home for a little visit before she had to leave.

On our walk along the canal, we saw a plastic bottle with small bottle tops around it that would let the bottle spin around. There were three rings of caps attached on their sides. Then from the bottom of the bottle in the center, the larger one, were bottle caps hung from strings that would sail out if they were
