At the reuse center at the dump the other day, I found a package of 14 disposable Petri dishes!

I have to make that agar goo up for them! There are so many things I can do with these!

1. I can collect monarch butterfly eggs in them and watch then hatch and feed them milkweed leaves.

2. I can collect some maggots and watch their life span (put a piece of raw meat in one and leave it outside until the green flies find it and lay all those little line-eggs on it, watch them hatch and grow and feed them and then see them make their little pupae and turn into flies! I’ll learn the whole life cycle of something so normal and gross that nobody ever learns anything about them except to wash out the garbage can or something!

3. I can touch it with my finger and see how much bacteria I have on it. I can let it grow and see if my dish soap kills it, or if antibiotics kill it.

This is going to be so much fun! I can’t wait! Now I have to get some agar happening here!

What would you research if you had some Petri dishes??

research, interesting, maggots, entomology
