Summary: Noah is dreaming while Reid operates on him
As the anesthesia took hold, Noah drifted off into sleep.
Noah was sitting in his director’s chair directing the next scene of The Brilliant and Handsome Director. He knew that this movie was going to win him yet another Academy Award for directing. It would be his fifteenth in two years. He sometimes felt bad for all of the other directors who worked in his shadow. His good friend, Jude Law, had once told Noah how Cecil B. DeMille had sobbed in his arms about what a hack he was compared to Hollywood wunderkind Noah Mayer. Akira Kurosawa and Jean Cocteau had recently started a petition to ensure that all future movies would be directed by Noah Mayer, as he was the only director with the artistic vision to change the world and to save civilization. Elia Kazan and Frank Capra had recently appeared before Congress to request a law be passed that no one was ever allowed to be mean to Noah Mayer ever again. Neil deGrasse Tyson had advised NASA that copies of all of Noah Mayer’s movies be put into the next space probe so that alien life forms would understand the artistic vision that all human beings aspired to.
The clanging sounds, symbolizing man’s existential despair, rang out on schedule. An incredible artistic panning shot of trees, symbolizing the Jungian archetype of the Wise Old Man, came next. Then came the breathtaking shot of the river, symbolizing the age-old struggle between whether to use ketchup or mustard on hot dogs. Then came the money-shot. A couple walking. With balloons. Helium-filled balloons. Damn, he was good. Noah’s chest ached with the knowledge that he was creating something beautiful and true.
Luke was there, walking towards the camera. Luke halted and smiled gently. He didn’t say a word. He didn’t try to pressure Noah into doing and feeling things that Noah didn’t want to do. He wasn’t pushing Noah into admitting he was gay. He wasn’t pressuring Noah not to join the Army. He wasn’t disappointing Noah by stealing a college election. He wasn’t demanding that Noah question Mason’s motivations. He wasn’t demanding anything from Noah. He wasn’t expecting anything from Noah that Noah didn’t feel like giving. He was perfect. Just like Noah always knew he could be.
