Summary: Lily and Lucinda have lunch at the Lakeview

Lily arrived at The Lakeview’s restaurant just as her mother was being seated. They greeted each other with kisses on the cheek and they sat down at the corner table they had reserved. They waved away the menus that the waiter started to hand them. They were both more than familiar with the menu. Lucinda ordered the lobster bisque and a glass of viognier. Lily ordered a Waldorf salad with a glass of sauvignon blanc.
"Darling," purred Lucinda. "That’s a lovely outfit you’re wearing. It’s so worth the chest cold that you’re going to catch."

"Thank you, mother," said a distracted Lily as she fumbled with her napkin.

"Darling, is something the matter?"

"I just came from visiting Noah at the hospital," said Lily.

"And how is Luke’s former paramour?" asked Lucinda. "Still playing the martyred victim?"
"Mother!" scolded Lily. "Noah is family. I can’t believe you would talk about him that way."

"Pfft," said Lucinda. "That boy stopped being family when he broke our precious darling’s heart."

"Noah was going though a difficult time," insisted Lily. "I can’t imagine how horrible it would be to lose your sight."

"There are plenty of blind people in the world who don’t use their handicap as an excuse to lash at the one person who loves them unconditionally," murmured Lucinda. "Luke is such a loving, fine person. He deserves to have someone who loves him and wouldn’t consider throwing him away like trash every single time things got complicated."

"I think you’re viewing their relationship in the harshest light possible, Mother."

"Darling, when was the last time Noah brought a smile to Luke’s face? When was the last time he sacrificed anything for Luke or did something thoughtful for him? Why aren’t you relieved that their horrible mesalliance is over and done with?"

"Luke loved Noah with his whole heart and soul. They’ve been through so much together. It’s sad thinking that they might not get together."

"You’re absolutely correct. They’ve been through so much together. Noah’s pretending to be straight. Noah marrying that girl. Noah blaming Luke for his father’s apparent suicide. Noah blaming Luke---"

"Okay, I get the picture," huffed Lily. "But True Love comes at a price."

"Darling, have you ever considered that Noah was Luke’s starter boyfriend instead of his True love? Luke is bright and caring and fun and generous. And he deserves someone who makes him happy. And if Noah made Luke happy for more than two minutes at a time, I’d be willing to overlook the fact that’s he’s such an ordinary boy."

"I’m just afraid that Luke might come to regret not fighting harder for Noah."

"Luke and Noah are not you and Holden. They’re more like you and Dusty. A cute little puppy love that ran it’s course."

"I’m afraid that Luke’s feelings for Noah might be confused by the fact that he’s . . . drawn to someone else. I don’t want Luke to lose out on being with Noah if this inappropriate infatuation with this other person loses it’s luster," whispered Lily furtively as though she was revealing State Secrets.

"Ooooh, are we talking about The Delicious Dr. Oliver?" asked Lucinda.

Lily gasped. "How did you know? And why didn’t you tell me?"

"I’ve seen the two of them interact at the hospital board meetings," admitted Lucinda. "I keep waiting for them to do it right there on the conference room table."

"Mother!" laughed Lily.

"And it’s not just sexual tension between the two of them," said Lucinda. "They work so well together. You should see our little Luke charming and cajoling the Board to do exactly what he wants regarding the neuro wing. And he’s really stepped up on this project. He’s been meeting with architects and researching medical equipment and protocols. And it’s so lovely to see how much The Delicious Dr. Oliver is impressed by him. I think that The Delicious Dr. Oliver actually sees how extraordinary Luke is."

"Really?" asked Lily hopefully. "I’ve been worried about what Dr. Oliver might want with Luke. He doesn’t seem like a nice man. At all."

"Nice! Bah, humbug," laughed Lucinda. "A good man is so much better than a nice man."

"But are we sure that Dr. Oliver is a good man?"

"One of his conditions for coming to Memorial was providing medical care for those that couldn’t afford it."

"That’s something that Luke would admire," admitted Lily. "Luke’s spent so much time being unhappy. I just want him to be happy."

"I think we just have to trust Luke to be able to figure out what would make him happy," said Lucinda.

"That’s very non-interfering of you," said an impressed Lily.

"Well, if he opts for the petulant child instead of the gorgeous, brilliant and wonderfully sarcastic neurosurgeon, I may have to reconsider my position on non-interference."
