The cry wakes her. Eowyn is instantly alert, as she has become accustomed to these past weeks. She reaches for her daughter, warm between them, and helps the infant find her breast.
She smiles through the brief pain of her milk. So much lost and won for this tiny child to exist, this shieldmaiden. Someday she will learn to ride and fight and sing the songs of their people, as her mother did before.
Eowyn has already vowed in her ancestors' names that this latch and suck is the only act her daughter will ever be told is women's work.
