okay, freaking out is an exaggeration, but the wedding planning came to a head when i received an insanely high quote from a potential caterer. yes, i understand that it's a federal holiday so staff will be paid time an a half, but you want to charge me $150 a person for HEAVY APPETIZERS?! who do you think you are? who do you think *I* am??! no ( Read more... )

oy, my sympathies. it sounds like it would piss me off royally as well. i actually do plan on trying the potluck thing, but it's hard when people are coming from out of town, eh? and as for a band, you should just make a long playlist and use your own ipods or whatever - i would much prefer that i hear music that i know and love already at my own wedding. but you know, i understand how nice it is to have live music too... just sayin', people don't need things to be fancy to have a great time. we will be so stoked just to celebrate with you, no matter what we're eating or drinking or listening to!

by the way, i heard you looked amazing in all the dresses you tried :)

oi. Good Luck. I remember sitting through this with my sister. The good news is, she threw the most amazing wedding EVER at which the entire family danced till we all fell over and there was lots of laughing and music and fun and love and all the good stuff, for under half her expected budget. And they're a single income couple.

It can be done! Just keep your wits about you and maybe don't throw the word "wedding" in till you've signed the contract. :)

Thanks everyone. I know this is a really silly thing to be stressed about, and I know that in the end, all that really matters is the things that m. said - that there be laughing and music and fun and love. I need to keep reminding myself that the other things are just icing.

But, E and I met with a caterer today who seemed really down to earth and doesn't have time and a half for July 4th! He does for holidays like Thanksgiving, etc, but he doesn't consider 7/4 to be in the same league. And, if staff are needed for over 8 hours, he's going to stagger them into two shorter shifts so that we can avoid overtime. yay!
