Title: Someone Else's Story
Fandom: Xxxholic/Cardcaptor Sakura
Characters: Watanuki and Sakura
Summary: A short piece where Watanuki encounters a familiar face.

“Arrrg! Not again!” Watanuki cried, trying to fill his lungs again as the enormous ghost crushed him beneath its bulk. “Geeeet off!”

Watanuki thrashed about, rolling around on the street but unable to escape the spirit’s girth. He grimaced at the thought that if Doumeki had been walking home with him today, this wouldn’t have happened. But who needed that idiot anyway? Watanuki could get out of this on his own. Unable to breathe, his surroundings grew hazy.

“Hey! Get out of here! Shoo!” Watanuki blinked as the spirit reluctantly rose from its victim and oozed down the street. A young girl who looked about Watanuki’s age stood above him still waving her arms around in the air.

“Uh… Thank you…” Watanuki sat up, squinting at the girl through his glasses. She looked vaguely familiar though her uniform was not from his school.

“All better now?” The girl stopped waving around and smiled brilliantly at Watanuki who got up and brushed himself off.

“Yes! Thank you again. I’m sorry, that must have looked strange.”

The girl shrugged. “There are lots of strange things in this world. Would you like me to walk you to where you’re going just in case it comes back?”

“Um… Sure. I mean… If it’s no trouble for you,” Watanuki stammered. He hated to bother anyone, but this girl seemed able not only to see spirits but to repel them, and without that lazy Doumeki around it would be a long, painful walk to Yuuko-san’s house.

“Not at all! Where to? I’m Kinomoto Sakura, by the way.”

Sakura! Of course that’s who this was. He had only seen her briefly and at that time she was unconscious, rain gliding down her face like tears. This was the girl that Syaoran-kun had vowed to save at the cost of everything dear to him, except it wasn’t her. She was not the Sakura-chan who was traveling from world to world to restore her memory, but one who lived here.

“Ah, nice to meet you Kinomoto-san. I’m Watanuki Kimihiro.”

“Oh, please call me Sakura-chan. Everyone does… Hey wait! Watanuki? Is that spelled like ‘April 1st’?”

“Huh? Oh.. Yes. It is.”

“That’s so funny! That’s my birthday.”

Sakura giggled and Watanuki, seeing her cheerful, beaming face couldn’t help but smile back.

“Mine too.”

They walked in relative silence the rest of the trip, commenting on the weather and the ridiculous school assignments teachers were constantly throwing at them.

“So… Um… Have you always been able to see spirits?”

Sakura blinked as if she had misheard him. “Have I what?”

“Been able to see spirits. Like the one earlier you told to go away?”

“Oh, that,” Sakura hesitated. “Well you seemed to have something on top of you… So I thought I’d help. But I couldn’t see anything. Was a spirit really on top of you?”

“Ah, um. I’m sorry… That must have sounded a little crazy.”

“No, no!” Sakura shook her hands in front of her. “Something was there. Just because I couldn’t see it doesn’t make it not real. It’s really neat that you see spirits, Watanuki-kun.”

“Ah, thank you,” Watanuki grimaced, knowing that despite Sakura’s kind words there was no way she could think of him as anything but raving mad. “Oh! Here it is.”

They stopped in front of Yuuko’s gate and Watanuki was grateful no one was in the courtyard to see his companion.

“You work here?” Sakura squinted in confusion. “I mean, it’s just an empty lot.”

“Oh… Well I mean around here. I should be fine now. Thank you so much for walking with me so far out of your way.”

“No problem at all!” Sakura still seemed slightly concerned but nodded anyway. “Well I guess I’ll be seeing you. It was very nice to meet you, Watanuki-kun!”

“You too!” Watanuki watched Sakura turn and go back where she’d come from down the pavement. “Hey.. uh.. Sakura-chan?” he called out, and immediately blushed.

“Hmm?” Sakura glanced back. “Yes?”

“Sorry. This is such a weird question. Please don’t take this the wrong way,” he hesitated, staring at his shoes to avoid her gaze.

“It’s okay. What is it?”

“Are… Er… Are you happy, Sakura-chan?”

Watanuki managed to raise his head enough to see her face. Sakura seemed puzzled at first and then set him at ease with another smile.

“Yes! Yes I am.”

“I’m glad to hear it.”

Sakura disappeared as Watanuki stood silently at the shop’s entrance, watching her go. She had been so similar and at the same time so different from the girl who had arrived at Yuuko’s shop only a few months before, stripped of her memories and close to death. He was glad to hear at least one Sakura had found joy in her life, and he silently wished that the other, in whatever distant world she was in, had found some happiness as well.
