Afternoon Distractions - Bleach Ficlet

Summary: Rukia runs into Orihime outside of school.
"Kuchiki-san!" Inoue Orihime cried out from across the street and then ran through moving traffic, more worried about keeping her large shopping bag balanced than avoiding oncoming cars. A few honks and loud screeches later, Orihime skipped over to her classmate, using her spare hand to wave another greeting. "What are you doing here, Kuchiki-san? Are you out shopping?"
Kuchiki Rukia stared up at Orihime with a mixture of horror and fascination. She glanced down at the hollow-detecting cell phone that she had been peering intently at moments before. "Oh uh..." Flipping the phone closed, she shoved it into her skirt pocket and assumed the exaggerated smile she gave to all humans who did not know her true identity as a shinigami. "Inoue-san! Well uh... Not really. I was just walking around here. Isn't the weather lovely?"
She had noticed through her studies of human media and culture while on Earth that they were always very intent on the weather. Whether it was nice or not or whether it would be nice or not in the future was a constant source of discussion. "Hmm..." Orihime looked up at the sky as if she hadn’t quite noticed how nice the day was. "Oh yes. Well I guess it is!"
"Orihime!" Tatsuki, another girl from their high school was calling from across the street, a small bag in hand. "Wait up!" Tatsuki exercised a bit more caution than her peer, checking the road before crossing. "I swear... I take my eyes off of you for two seconds and you’ve wandered into another world. Oh, hi Kuchiki-san."
Rukia had noticed Tatsuki was always a bit cautious around her. She suspected it was because of her unusual relationship with Ichigo. It was odd for two high school students who had really only met a few weeks before to be constantly seen together. I should make more of an effort to avoid him at school, she decided, though with all the hollows appearing recently she usually had no choice but to drag him away from class to dispense of the creatures.
"Well it was very nice seeing you both! I best be on my way," Rukia smiled brilliantly, backing away from the girls.
"Oh wait! Hey, Tatsuki...Give her one of them..."
"Orihime... I got these for you," Tatsuki groaned as the other girl dug through the small bag she was holding.
"There are more than enough! Here you go, Kuchiki-san! I hope you like peppermint!" The exuberant girl held the circular candy out to Rukia who looked at it in puzzlement. Was this to eat?
"Thank you, Inoue-san!" She put on her brightest smile as she accepted the gift, not wanting to risk her image as a normal human being. Holding the small object tightly in her fist as she walked down the street, Rukia flipped open her cell phone to begin scanning for new hollows. She would have to ask Ichigo about the peppermint later.
