i spent the last week in New York City. the city that never sleeps. a place where we went to be a light among the darkness. stepping outside of our comfort zones and trusting. trusting that the God who called us to it would see us through it. we set up prayer stations in the subways and prayed with the willing. it's amazing to see how a single smile could light a fire in the heart of one person. something so out of the ordinary. we placed ourselves in a situation of persecution. a place where the truth has been so overshadowed by a busy and lost population. men and women of all ethnicities and backgrounds came. they came humbly to ask for prayer. to see God using us in amazing ways was a humbling experience. making ourselves willing to be used and seeing the Lord's faithfulness to bless and keep us in that gave me a greater glimpse of the Father and His love for us.
we spent Thursday walking around different parks throughout the city giving sandwiches to the homeless. as we were on the subway a woman carrying everything she owned loudly introduced herself. she spoke of her unemployment and inability to feed herself and her two children. she came begging. begging for one person to give in any capacity. i sat in that subway car holding a bag of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. i approached the woman and told her i wanted to bless her with this food for her and her children. her face lit up and she thankfully said "God Bless you". the woman continued to beg for money from those surrounding her. as the subway came to a stop the woman's last statement was "please give something today. be a helping hand. don't any of you believe in karma? what comes around goes around". she then exited the subway car. the small group traveling with me sat in numbness of what had just been said and done. Emily, sitting right next to me said, "it's ok. God created her. and He still loves her.". the woman had nothing. she came begging. she doesn't know the truth. but God loves her. He loves her where she is right now. lost, confused, broken, and suffering. He loves her. and we had the opportunity to show her that love. we had the chance to speak of the love of Christ. and sometimes that involves no words at all.
