now that my bike is complete (handmade with love from H) I've been cruising the back neighborhood roads on it. I need to get a helmet before I take it out for real, but its been nice to go for a short pedal around the block.
Yesterday Harlen and I went to a park by our house on our bikes and I experimented with going off road to get a feel for it. I crashed going down a moderately steep grassy hill, the ground was fairly soft, and slightly damp, and my road tires just didn't have the purchase. it was a nice fall, I tucked and rolled to the side, it was fun and incredibly surprising. I haven't fallen/crashed off a bike since I was about 13 or so, and I certainly never rode down a hill to do it.
Poor Harlen was distraught, the look on my face must have been priceless...stunned I think, but I was fine, so I brushing the dirt off and we continued to some trails. We were playing on bike trails so there were smalls humps and burms, nothing fancy, as I have never ridden on much more than flat ground. I went to roll up a small hump, didn't have enough speed and had to put my right foot down, the bike started to roll backwards, so I swung my left leg over to get off the bike. I had anticipated that my left foot would hit the ground at the same level my right foot was at, but I was standing off the trail among the greenery and couldn't see the uneven ground. I jarred my left heel, hard, then had to flex it fairly well as there was no ground under the bad of my heel. it was one of those OUCH moments that you have to stop and shake it off, after a minute I checked my range of motion, the pain was gone and I didn't give it another thought.
After our ride I walked to the grocery store, cleaned up the house, made dinner...I had forgotten about my misstep in the woods because it didn't hurt at all, no tenderness, nothing.
After dinner, I was curled up with a book in my favorite armchair, when I noticed my ankle felt a bit bruised, I poked it and it was definitely tender. About 15 minutes later, I noticed it felt hot and throbby....a gave it few more minutes, then I decided to rub a topical homeopathic anti inflammatory into it. I didn't elevate it and kept sitting...but it really started to hurt, and when I got up to make tea, I could hardly put any weight on it at all. I iced it, and it steadily became MUCH more painful, to the point where Harlen very gently rubbed more ointment onto it and my eyes watered horribly. I was a little concerned by now, I have a high pain tolerance, and this shit hurt....
to be continued....haha!
