Well, that was one of the most unnerving nights I've had. The mister woke me up coming back to bed just before 4 -ish. I was starting to settle down again & drift off when suddenly there was a loud bang! from outside. Both of us jumped out of bed & looked out the window. We weren't sure what the noise was, or where it was coming from. The street looked extremely quiet as it should at 4 am, and nobody was around. But the energy felt really weird. Eventually, we had enough of peering out of windows & sleep led us back to bed. I was still a bit jumpy, & I didn't relax enough to fall asleep right away. Just as I was drifting off, there was another loud bang! with the added bonus of seeing a flash of light through the curtains. This time we bolted out of bed. I went into the living room & hid behind a wall (which are concrete) while the mister peeped out of the window in the kitchen. Still not a soul on the street. I went into the bathroom & looked out that window too, & there was absolutely nobody on the streets. At least in the street lights. The mister could see other people looking out of their windows, but there was no movement outside at all. We both heard a person or persons calling to each other by whistles. That was super creepy. It sounded to me like one person trying to call to another & not getting a response.
We still don't know what the noise was, or why, or anything. It was just completely random. It sounded like fireworks. I remember having some fireworks that made a noise like that when you threw them on the ground/against something solid. As far as I remember, they didn't make a light, but smelled sulphur-y after discharge. In contrast, when a bunch of us were playing with them, we were giggling & loud. Also, it wasn't 4 am. So very random to set off a couple of fireworks without there being a party or some such going on. I'm not sure if what we heard was a firework or a gun. I've never actually heard gunfire in real life. Only on tv/film. So I have no idea if it was perhaps someone fooling around with a gun. This disturbs me to the very depths. But, for the flash to be that bright I could see it around the edges of my blackout curtains, WTF. Whoever was doing the thing had to be right under our bedroom window. For the record, the noise was oddly flat, not especially loud. It was a ... fast sound. So many questions, with no answers. I'm totally unsettled right now. Oh, and I started my holidays today too! Isn't that a great way to kick them off.
