The joys of the college life

Jan 11, 2006 15:25

Soooo...I'm back in San Antonio. Woo!

Yesterday I met with a couple of people about my schedule...made sure I had it all organized and such...and then last night my mom and I went and saw The Producers, which was as hysterically funny as when I saw it onstage last summer (the summer before?). I'm still wondering whether Uma Thurman was actually singing or not, but if she was - damn. She can sing.

Today was the first day of classes...my first class was my first-year seminar, at 11:30. I really had no idea what it was about when I walked in, other than that it somehow involved science fiction. Turns out the central...theme...of the class is religion vs. science, the existing conflicts between the two, etc. etc. Which doesn't sound half bad. Some of the stuff the prof said we'd be talking about is similar to some of the course material in the evolutionary theory class I took in high school, so for that part at least I'll get to feel intelligent. We have seven books we'll be reading from (SEVEN. Geez), and I belive two of them are fiction; one is Origin of Species; and the others are all the sort of books that analyze the conflict of blah blah blah. Or something like that. Apparently we'll also be watching Frankenstein, Inherit the Wind, and Contact. I actually read Inherit the Wind in eighth grade and sort of liked it...I think perhaps it was a bit heavy for eighth-graders, but I liked it all right, I suppose. I'll know what's going on, at least. We also *coughcough* read Frankenstein in my Brit Lit class last semester, so that's one more thing that'll be a bit easier on me. I rather like the prof, too - apparently he's an engineering prof usually, electrical engineering to be specific, which should make my dad go OMGYEY when he finds out. XD

My second class was country and western dancing. Yes, you read that right. I need an "athletics" credit. *shrug* If nothing else it should be fun to learn so that I can actually dance next time I go to Cowboys (the big country dance hall here in SA). Part of the reason it was amusing today was that I found out a couple of friends of mine are in the class - Shawn, who is a Delt and a senior; and Nicole, who lives in Calvert with us. Apparently Shawn dragged her along because he hadn't signed up with a partner. Apparently most people hadn't, either, because there ended up being four more girls than there were guys. Oops. So now I'm sharing Shawn with Nicole. Heehee. Hopefully the class'll even out more over the next couple of weeks while people do add/drop.

Last class of the day was an Intro to Linguistics class. Apparently there's no tests or exams - WOO! - but there is a lot of written work. Oh well. Most of it appears to be answering questions following the chapters we're assigned to read, which shouldn't be too bad. I am going to have to do a group assignment where we lead a class, but since it'll be done in a group that'll help take some of the stress off of me. I think I'm going to like this prof, too - he seemed nice, and certainly as though he tries to make an effort to make it an enjoyable class for us, which is good.

Here's the best part, though.

See the building with the red circle? That's where my first-period class is. Then I go waaaay down to the green one. Then back up to the blue one. And I get ten minutes in-between each class. Keep in mind, also, that the black line is a bigass hill. Joy.

I'm trying to convince myself that all that walking, in combination with the dance class (which is a lot more active than I expected, btw) will help me lose some weight this semester. Woo.

Now I'm working on my laundry...or, more specifically, my sheets and towels. u__u And then once that's finished, I have all of my clothes to contend with. u__u again.

At least I have a three-day weekend to look forward to - no school on MLK Monday, woo!! And then on Tuesday is the first Flux meeting of the semester, at which we will, no doubt, discuss our upcoming trip to Ushicon. Which is going to rock hardcore, even though I'm not sure I'll be able to pull together any good cosplays before then. Fortunately I should have plenty of time to do so before A-kon, since I'll have been out of school for a month before then, yey!

Also, a note to my lovely Haremers: I may not be on as frequently this semester as I have been in the past. I really need to focus more on my schoolwork this semester, which will mean I need to do more stuff every night, in addition to actually going to bed before, like, four A.M. Never fear, though - I will keep updating the journal. XD You people are just so distracting - it's impossible to only be on for an hour or two! Oy vey. Look what you've done to me. XD
