Cosmetics review: Limecrime Makeup Suedeberry Velvetine lip color

Dec 11, 2012 12:11

I started following Limecrime Makeup a few months ago on Instagram and am a fan of Doe Deere's dark psychedelic princess look and vegan, cruelty-free makeup line. She's sellin her Velvetine lip color line hard this holiday season-- in particular, this coral-red Marilyn Monroe-esque color Suedeberry:

I love how her skin is white tinged with lavender. So very Snow White... or the evil queen. Anyways, I love this color and decided to put it through my research process before potentially buying it. My main priorities are that the cosmetic is toxin-free and treats animals, the planet, customers, and each other (in terms of fair labor practices and whatnot) very well. Limecrime is pretty forthcoming about being vegan and cruelty-free, so they're clean there. I use Cosmetics Database to research my bath and body products-- you can look up a product or ingredient and find out the breakdown of ingredients, their toxicity rating, and what diseases or problems, if any, the ingredient is associated with. CD is great for looking up the stats on mainstream cosmetics, but for the indie brands like Limecrime, you (or more likely, I) just have to look up the ingredients of the cosmetic item in question and crunch em manually. Here are the results. I linked to the page if any score comes up 3 or higher so you can look into the toxicity deets yourself:
Isododecane: 0
Dimethicone: 0
Trimethylsiloxysilicate: 0
Polybutene: 1
Petrolatum: 2
Mica: 2
Synthetic (Cera Alba) Wax: 0
Kaolin: 0-1
Disteardimonium Hectorite: 0
Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil: 0
Silica Silylate: 0
Silica: 0
Cyclopentasiloxane: 3
Phenoxyethanol: 4
Caprylyl Glycol:0
Disteardimonium Hectorite: 0
Propylene Carbonate: 1
Ethylhexylglycerin: 1
Alcohol Denat: 4
Hexylene Glycol: 1
Flavor: N/A
[+/-]
Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891): 2-6 depending on use
FD&C Red 7 Calcium Lake (CI 15850:1): N/A
Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77499, CI 77492): 2
FD&C Yellow No 5 Lake (CI 19140): N/A
FD&C Blue No 1 Aluminum Lake (CI 42090:2): N/A
Red 6 Lake (CI 15850): N/A
Tin Oxide (CI 77861): 2

Looks very good! The highest is a "2-6 depending on use" ranking for Titanium Dioxide, which is commonly used in sunscreens. Limecrime listed it as [+/-] so I assume that means that the ingredient exists in miniscule amounts. Does anyone know if makeup producers list their ingredients in order from greatest to lowest a la food producers? Anyways, at this point, I give this product a very good rating and I'm saying buy, buy, buy. Once Suedeberry Velvetine hits my face, I'll post again with pictures and my observations on how well it wears. Eeee! ^__^
