Iglesia de San Jose Orosi

There's not much architecture to seek for in Costa Rica. There are also no pyramids and such built by natives, like in other countries in the area. The conditions of the zone wouldn't have allowed to, most of the country being on mountains and active volcanoes, and after the Europeans showed up... You know the story. In Cartago itself, the only notable buildings would be also some churches, the University, a highschool. (There is also something called "the ruins", a building started by someone long, long time ago, and never finished, now looking like the ruins of a big gothic cathedral. Now I realiza I didn't take pics of it, but it's because we were always in the car when we went by and it's rather difficult to stop there to take pics).

The oldest church still in use in Costa Rica is in Orosi, San Jose Orosi.

Built in 1743.

The entry gate. And a palm tree filled with parrots.

The front entry. The church is not very big, it looks like a long, not very tall hall.

The bell tower, actually it seemed like the tallest construction in the area.

Inside, old paintings on the walls and these things. Jesus looks, with that green face, like he was unburried after 3 days. That was the color of his face, is no light trick.

On a curtain, pictures from all sorts of events involving this church, I assume. They also had there a sound system, mics and electrical music instruments.

The main altar, with lots and lots of flowers. Calle lillies. They actually grow in the wild there. (Like many other plants we pay loads of money here for).

The paintings on the wall depicted the story from the New Testament. This particular painting caught my eye because of that angel/child Jesus lifting Mary's skirt. :P

Old church with old cemetery. The new ones look a whole lot different.

All the graves in this cemetery had this stone with a hole in it. Wonder what purpose did it serve.

In the church's garden, a lot of green parrots. They are very noisy, indeed.

And they fly very fast, difficult to catch one staying still enough to take a pic. Only this one who seemed very curious about us.

First he flew in the tree, than on the roof and was looking at us from there.
