Of cockroaches, hot springs and typhoons

We have Internet access at the ryokan we're staying at in Tokyo which is very nice. There is a wireless connection here and eath_in_dublin brought her laptop with her, so all's well. :) We had some problems with loading the battery of this thing first, but now it's working.

I think I'm going to make some sort of a day-to-day recounting of the trip later, so I'm only going to make brief updates for now.

-We got the Kyoto accommodation problem sorted out with the help of a travel agency. They sold us tickets to a night bus (going there) and to a shinkansen (coming back) and they booked rooms for us in a hotel next to the Kyoto train station. This is very relieving. We can go there after all.

-I've been eating so many onigiris for breakfast and evening snack that I think I'm going to get fed up with them soon. They're just so handy to eat! You don't need any sort of cutlery (which we wouldn't even have).

-We went to sing karaoke and it was great fun.

-There was a cockroach in my and Eath's room this morning. We screamed, but just a bit. I had seen pictures of them before coming here, but this was the first time I saw one for real (except perhaps in a zoo or something). It moved really fast and apparently it's difficult to kill them, so it should be caught somehow and... thrown out? I don't know. It disappeared before the owner came. Brr.

-We visited Hakone today. There were (small-ish) mountains full of trees and cool things like a rope way ride. We were supposed to be able to see Mt. Fuji from there but it was so foggy we couldn't see anything at all. Also, the ship cruise part was closed because of heavy wind or something. We didn't get to see all the main sights. At the end of the trip we went to bathe in an onsen. It was wonderful.

-There is a typhoon approaching and it has hit the southern Japan already. The weather report says this for Sunday: "Typhoon will bring damaging winds and torrential rainfall. Winds from the ENE at 101 km/h." That sounds rather interesting. We're going to Kyoto on Sunday night with a night bus... hopefully those won't be cancelled.

Bed time. Oyasumi!
