[snippet] Come Morning

Mar 03, 2014 23:59

while I realize such a thing would be better received on Tumblr, I have no intention of linking these accounts. what can I say, I'm an old fogey of the internet now. :p

This would take place after the other Come Morning sequel snippets, right after Erik decides to leave Charles (yet again) to pursue Shaw.  Which means yes there is some sort of hazy plot taking shape, help.  However, no current plans to actively make a sequel.

Charles has known this day would come, but he's not sure Erik's ever given it thought. Erik can't stand to be touched when he's in this sort of mood, but Charles reaches out, herepresentI'mhere Erik I'm here.

Erik, of course, does not reach back, but Charles sees a slight tilt of his head.

Charles tries again. "I'm not going to ask you to stay."

It's not the right thing to say, but nothing he could say could ever be right.

Burying his hands deeper in his pockets, Erik looks out, the landscape of skyscrapers now changed to the ocean.

Charles smiles. "Are you going to ask me to help you fly?"

"I'll only fly as far as you'll let me."

Then (let) go. Stepping to meet Erik at the edge of the cliff, he presses a hand beneath Erik's shoulder blades.

And Erik steps off the cliff and out of this dream entirely.

Charles wakes, a small smile on his lips, knowing Erik is gone.

Even though he knows Erik is gone, he uses his key to Erik's studio apartment, unsurprised to find it empty. The dishes are put away, the coffee maker clean and empty, not a single faucet dripping. Erik is, if anything, an unfailingly good at leaving little to do for those he left behind.

Charles sits himself down in Erik's bed, neatly made of course, and runs his hands over the quilted comforter.

He splits his time between his own cluttered apartment and Erik's empty one. He worries this is a bad habit he's forming, a tad unhealthy perhaps. But he and Erik are tied tightly together, and to have his presence suddenly gone is unnerving even though he's lived alone before. Erik's mind is a silent beacon, burning in some off distance Charles' mind only recognizes as far away.

But it seems might miss him just a little as well.

One night Charles wakes up in an unfamiliar bed. The mattress feels very familiar, but it's sheets and blankets are quilted. While he searches for a light to better see his surroundings, someone draws closer and Charles is not afraid when a body folds itself on top of the covers, tightening them around his waist.

Erik?

The shape says nothing, but Erik takes his hand and sleeps sweetly next to him.

Charles wakes from this dream and surveys the emptiness of his apartment with something very like loneliness.

Emma Frost walks into his dreams as if she belongs there, and it feels like something ugly that does not belong.

You're not going to let him have all the fun are you?

Charles is better than when he first met her, and already he is finding the little traces of her spread throughout his mind.  I'd like it if you leave, please. He nets her like a slippery fish, throwing her back to the sea of her own mind, and she laughs at him.
