FANFICTION CORNER: LOVE EXCHANGE( chapter two-part two)

‘I think I owe you an explanation.’

The young girls were now sitting in a cosy café, savouring ice-creams in order to recover from the earlier events. Scilia stared at Ju-Ri with expectant eyes over her gigantic chocolate and cookies cup, whereas the other was hesitantly toying with her spoon in her non-less gigantic vanilla-fudge serving, topped by an extravagant amount of whipped cream. The previous incident had actually made the brown-haired girl quite worried, and she couldn’t figure out what she had done to make Ju-Ri so distressed.

‘Do you remember before entering the elevator, I told you there was something important you should know?’ she started.

Scilia nodded, waiting for what was going to come next.

‘The boys you met earlier are in fact really famous here in Korea. And when I say famous, I mean by that they are stars.’

Scilia’s eyes widened in surprise, and she choked on her ice cream in a very un-ladylike manner:

‘WHAT?’ she burst out in amazement.

‘There are singers in a group called Super Junior. They made their debut more than a year ago, they are 13 in fact, and 3 of them happen to live in the same residence as us.’ She paused, waiting for some kind of reaction, but Scilia could only gape at her, thunderstruck. She resumed her explanation :’They appear in commercials, dramas, shows…Really, you can’t miss them. Actually, you have to come from another country to be ignorant about Super Junior, which is just your case.’

Scilia slowly recovered from the news:’ I had really no idea he was famous! From what I’ve seen of him, he just looks like the average boy for me…So you mean when I watch TV I can see them?’

Ju-Ri nodded, sighing.’ Yes. It’s such a funny coincidence you met Kim Kibum at the airport yesterday, and more than that, you BUMPED into him. I mean tons of girls would dream to stumble on him by mistake, it’s just strange how it had to happen to YOU.’At these words, she started to smile: ‘Why do I feel like the coming months with you are going to be a lot of fun?’

They stared at each other before bursting into laughter, suddenly brightening the atmosphere to Scilia’s great relief.

But yet, Ju-Ri was very eager to warn the young girl about something, or rather someone. Kibum and Hankyung were rather harmless in fact, in her opinion; both of them were the quiet and polite type, modest and even shy. But Kim Heechul was, without a shadow of a doubt, the one to be wary about. ‘Let me tell you, I’ve heard this man is known in the entertainment industry for his awful temper, and moreover, he loves to torment and bully his hyungs, the younger members of the group. You can’t be too cautious of him. He likes to pick on people and even in the residence, everybody is intimidated by him. Just avoid him the more you can, ok? ‘

Scilia nodded. It was not in her intentions to get more acquainted with Kim Heechul anyway; the remembrance of the earlier incident was too painfully vivid to her. But she had to admit with Ju-Ri the whole situation was really extraordinary. What was the probability for her to live in the same residence than a very popular Korean group? It had been two days only since she had had arrived in Seoul and so many things had happened to her…

‘Last advice.’  Ju-Ri’s sudden shift of tone startled her out of her reverie. Her roommate was looking at her with stern eyes. ’Don’t fall in love with one of them.’ A brief moment of silence ensued, and before the baffled Scilia had enough time to process her words through her mind, Ju-Ri was grinning again: ’Let’s go! I still have to show you the interesting spots of Seoul!’ The young girls paid for their ice creams and left the café to start their most promising tour of the city.

The day after was Scilia’s first day at Jilman Art School. She had been briefed by Ju-Ri about the teachers, the schedule and the life on the campus:

‘I think you’ll be very pleased with the school. We have the latest features in terms of computers and programs. Your major is animation right? Most of people who graduated from here work now in famous studios in Japan or in the States.’

In addition, she had been instructed prior her departure that the Korean teachers in charge of exchange students required them to show a display of their drawings, and they were known for their strictness. In her life, Scilia had drawn tons of things: as long as she could remember, it has been her passion. It was as evident for her as breathing, the only way she came up with to express herself truly, without the hypocrisy and awkwardness of words. She had selected 20 pieces of work to show, and she was very nervous about her choice. Her inspiration was mostly fairies and deities from the European pantheon: elves, dryads, gargoyles and other magical creatures from Ancient Times who filled the fairytales and legends she loved to hear when she was a little girl. She really hoped her drawings wouldn’t look too childish for her severe teachers. As a result, the brown-haired girl had barely got any sleep.

Ju-Ri and Scilia had a quick breakfast and hurried early out of the flat. When they reached the ground floor, the latter realized she had forgotten her purse on the living-room table. She told her roommate to go ahead while she came back to retrieve the item. She cursed at herself to be so oblivious on such an important day, and she cursed again at her bad luck when, ten minutes later, she dropped all the content of her portfolio in the lobby. She was busy gathering the scattering drawings when a familiar deep voice said out of the blue:

‘Do you need some help?’

It was a voice she was growing accustomed to hear in the less expected and most embarrassing moments. Kibum was already by her side picking the pieces of paper.

‘Thanks… a lot’ she managed to stammer.

It was soon done and Scilia reviewed her drawings, searching for a particular one…obviously the one Kibum was holding and staring at. It had caught his attention and he felt strangely attracted to it. It was as though the picture was talking to him in a faint voice. Yes, it was trying to communicate, or at least it was what Kibum thought. The picture represented a woman; the upper part of her body had soft feminine curves whereas the rest of her silhouette ended by a fish tail. Decorating her arms like a translucent cape were fins. She was fixed in a gracious movement, darting out of the sea in an ultimate tentative to escape from what seemed like her maritime prison, her fair hair floating above her, arms spread wide as though she was about to fly. For Kibum, the whole drawing emanated a claim from freedom and grace, and its mute voice kept echoing in the young boy’s mind, again and again. It reverberated in his head until the spell was broken by a timid Scilia:

‘Excuse me, can I take this?’

Kibum shook his head as someone who has just been caught daydreaming.

‘Oh, of course. Here you are.’

Scilia took the piece of paper and put in the portfolio: ‘Thanks a lot for your help. I’m in a hurry, goodbye!’ and she dashed out of the lobby.

Kibum stood there, watching her. How could a simple drawing leave him such a strong impression? It was as though the picture whispered to him at first, and then the voice had grown louder and louder to burst in a silent scream, piercing the ears of his mind. It has been a strange experience, although very brief.

He shrugged his shoulders and exited to the street, where a black van was waiting to drive him to a filming location in Seoul suburbia. But he had learned something from the drawing: he knew now from the sign that the mocha-haired girl’s name was Scilia.
